When Vivian Chan came to Old Oak Drive five years ago, she was moved by the friendliness of her neighbors, and she knew she had found a home. “When I moved in, the neighbors greeted me and brought me flowers,” she says. “I felt really welcome.” In turn, when new residents recently arrived, she invited them to pick berries in her backyard and to go for a swim in her pool.
On Old Oak Drive, neighbors look out for each other and care for each others’ properties when they go on vacation. “They are willing to help,” says Chan. They also exchange hellos on their way to work and have each other over for dinner. “People living here have the time for you,” she says, “It’s really nice here.”
Denise Malacrea, who has lived in Almaden all her life, has always loved this location and vowed that if a home became available, she would buy it. “The homes on this street have character,” she says, “and the lawns are well-manicured.” Malacrea also appreciates the natural beauty of the rolling hills viewed from Old Oak Drive, as well as its prime location. “You can walk to the park, stores and library from here,” she says, “yet it’s peaceful and
quiet.” Although they’ve barely moved in, the Malacrea family takes pride in ownership, taking time to water the plants and tend to the garden. They have also already met a few of the neighbors. Unfortunately, they might not be able to stay, as their previous home hasn’t sold and they can’t manage both mortgages. “I really like this street,” sighs Denise.
The Hubbards were originally attracted by the beauty of the court, as well as its location. “The view’s beautiful,” says Kevin Hubbard, “and deer come up the drive.” For Liz Hubbard, this home was a case of love at first sight. “I just love this house,” she says. The Hubbards also appreciate Almaden’s great schools and community feel.
“People are nice here,” she says, “We know the neighbors and see each other in the grocery store. It’s a real feel of belonging,” agrees Kevin. “This is a great neighborhood,” he says, “with great neighbors.”
In addition to the area’s great schools—students attend Wil-liams Elementary School, Bret Harte Middle School and Leland High School—the Hubbards enjoy getting to know their neighbors and supporting their
community. They throw summer and holiday barbeques, host sports team parties, and socialize with neighbors. “We know our neighbors, which is rare in a lot of neighborhoods,” says Kevin. “My wife plays bunko with one of the neighbors, and I coach with another.” In addition, the neighborhood children grew up together on the court playing baseball, basketball and football. “The court’s really busy year-round with sports,” says Kevin. The Hubbards have lived on Old Oak Drive for about 12 years. “I think we’ll be here for another 10 years,” says Kevin.
On Old Oak Drive, Sandra Coutinho found the old-time feel she was searching for. With three boys, she likes living on a cul-du-sac and being close enough to Williams Elementary School that the children can bike to
school. Coutinho also admires her surroundings. “The trees form a gateway off of Trinidad, welcoming you,” she
says. “It’s so serene.” Coutinho was initially attracted to the street because of its idyllic setting. “We have wonderful mountain views (overlooking Boulder Ridge Golf Course as well as Mount Umunhum),” she says.
After living there for five years, she isn’t planning on moving anytime soon. “My house is definitely not for sale,” she says with a smile.
