Governor urges citizens to be blood donors

Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger has issued a proclamation declaring January 2008 as Volunteer Blood Donor Month in California.

“Donating blood is a fantastic way to help save lives,” said Schwarzenegger. “Whether an individual is a regular donor or has never donated, I strongly encourage all Californians in good health to donate blood.”

Since 1970, the president of the United States has recognized January as National Blood Donor Month highlighting the importance of giving the gift of life through blood donations. January is traditionally a time when it is difficult to recruit blood donors following the holidays and due to illness and inclement weather.

“Donating blood can be intimidating at first, but in reality does not require much sacrifice,” Schwarzenegger added.

“The American Red Cross feels that a gubernatorial proclamation will have a tremendous impact in encouraging the citizens of California to give blood to patients in need,” said spokeswoman Sara O’Brien. “Very few eligible donors make the time to donate blood. The governor has been effective in reaching the people of California on many topics and we hope everyone is listening now.”

The Red Cross has blood centers in San Jose. Mobile blood drives are held throughout the Bay Area, Silicon Valley and the Santa Cruz coast. In general, donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors must bring appropriate identification such as a driver’s license. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit www.BeADonor.com.
