Meaning of Veterans Day not lost on neighbors

Editor,
On this past Veteran’s Day I received a surprise in my mail slot at home, a hand made decorated card with stars and stripes that said the following, “Happy Veterans Day! We truly appreciate your service to our country! Thank You! Best wishes!” It was signed, “a family who’s proud to be an American family and proud to be your neighbor”.

I served in the Marine Corps for 14 years (non-combat), but my father who lives with me served in two wars (WWII and Korea), was combat wounded and highly decorated.

I would like to thank the family who sent this card to my home and say that the words written are some that all veterans can appreciate. It is nice that the meaning of Veterans Day was not lost by these folks.

The sentiment beautifully made in this card I believe is something we should all feel, for though some sacrifices made by veterans are small like myself, some are great like my father’s and some are the ultimate as in the case of Pat Tillman. It is so important to remember the price of freedom that we all share, borne by ordinary men and women, some past, some present (as in Iraq and Afghanistan and others) and some in the future that make this in my estimation the greatest country on the face of the planet.
