During the recent Olympic Games, millions of people witnessed the culture, the arts and the technological wonders that China showcased for the entire world to see. It represented a country coming of age, one worth taking a second look—from a more up-front and personal perspective.

Next April, a delegation of business leaders and elected officials will join the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce in exploring what China has to offer.

Over the past 60 years, China’s laws and regulations have shown continued improvement, as has its commitment toward reforming its financial system and working to clean up the environment. The development of special tax protection zones, as well as coastal economic regions that are now open to worldwide investment opportunities, are clear indicators that there is much we need to know about this country on the fast track to becoming a global leader.

With a 5 percent share in the world economy and a 25-year growth rate average of 10 percent, China’s influence continues to grow, as it inches closer to becoming the world’s largest economy and one of the leading destinations for foreign investment. China’s venture capital allocated for business and partnerships now reach 160 countries and regions worldwide.

Equally as impressive—but far less well known—are the ambitious plans China has for its future, which will be accomplished primarily through education. Having nearly eliminated illiteracy, programs are now in place to extend basic education, teach English as a second language from third grade on and graduate more higher education students. Its bold, long-term vision for investing in education and preparing their people for the global economy could soon give China the competitive edge, especially with its intense focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, along with programs that partner industry with students for “on the job” education.

We would be wise to study these goals and the clearly aligned system of implementing them that has become part of China’s culture.

This Chamber trip, beginning in the capital city of Beijing, will provide a unique opportunity to meet with business and government leaders in China and tour the Hangzhou Economic Development Zone, followed by sightseeing excursions to the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, the Ming Tombs, Palace Museum and Summer Palace. Additional stops will include Shanghai and Suzhou, the Lingering Garden, Tiger Hill, and Hanshan Temple.

Perhaps the most important outcome of this trip will be what we see, learn and experience first-hand of the history, people and economic development of this emerging country. With only a limited number of seats available, I encourage you to reserve yours today and join us, as we embark on this global experience.
