VETERANS DAY EVENTS – FRIDAY, NOV. 11
87th annual Veterans Day Ceremony and Parade
The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the reviewing stand at Market Street and Park Avenue. The parade begins at noon at Highway 87 and Santa Clara Street and proceeds along Market Street toward the reviewing stand. The honorary marshal is retiring Mercury News columnist Leigh Weimers, who is an Army veteran who celebrating both his retirement and his 70th birthday.
Stories of Service
A video-storytelling tribute to seven Bay Area soldiers who died in Iraq will be presented from 2–4 p.m. at the Montgomery Theater, 271 S. Market Street. The free program will feature short videos featuring each soldier’s story as told by the soldier’s family to volunteers from the nonprofit Digital Clubhouse Network. Veteran’s Day dance/concert
A dance/concert will be held in the San Jose Elks Lodge Grand Ballroom, 444 W. Alma Ave., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Another dance will be held on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the American GI Forum’s Grand Ballroom, 765 Story Road. Medal of honor recipients Col. Donald Ballard and Gen. Patrick Brady will be in attendance and both events will feature Pete Jacobs and his Wartime Radio Revue, which includes three singers, similar to the Andrews Sisters, and a 16-piece orchestra. Patriotic concert
A concert by the Cupertino Symphonic Band will feature a program of patriotic music and a musical tribute to all branches of the service. Veterans Day holiday closings
All federal, state, county and city offices in the South Bay will be closed for Veterans Day. There will be no mail delivery. Libraries, banks and schools will be closed. Garbage collection will not be disrupted.
