St. Stephen’s Episcopal School celebrates Day of the Dead
During the busy week when children focus on Halloween costumes and candy, the students at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in South San Jose were also busy preparing for Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

Day of the Dead is one of the most colorful traditions celebrated in Mexico to honor deceased loved ones. At St. Stephen’s, students were encouraged to bring in photos and make pictures of deceased loved ones. In their Spanish and art classes they made colorful masks and skeletons from recycled materials.
An altar was made adorned with lights, candles and the student’s projects. Pictures of deceased relatives, friends and even pets were placed throughout the handmade trinkets. Notes from the students were personal and heartwarming and illustrated the children’s connection with their deceased loved ones.
Spanish teacher Ines De Reyes, who has been involving students in this celebration for 12 years said, “I have seen so many parents touched by this. Looking at the pictures and writings brought tears to many.” De Reyes added that by adopting a custom from another country it has allowed the children to express their grief and loss and have it be a positive experience to remember and honor their loved ones.
