November 5 – Saturday
Performing in the Agenda Lounge’s indoor space, The Kim Nalley Quintet will present a set of scat-punctuated, blues-tinged jazz in the tradition of the Count Basie vocalists, Billie Holiday, Helen Humes, Joe Williams and Dinah Washington. A frequent sideman with Nalley, trumpeter Allen Smith adds further credence to the Quintet’s authenticity in jazz, swing and blues.  Born in 1925, Smith has played with some of the greatest vocalists in jazz history, including Ella Fitzgerald, Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Wilson, in addition to performances with Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and others. Performance is from 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm, with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. The Agenda Lounge is located at 399 S. First Street in San Jose. Admission is with dinner, $10 without dinner. Join the Mission Chamber Orchestra (MCO),at Le Petit Trianon, 72 N. 5th Street, San Jose  as they celebrate Mozart and the Classics with a program featuring highly acclaimed pianist and Palo Alto native Hélène Wickett performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 9.   The concert will also include Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony no. 1 in D, Donizetti’s Sinfonia for Winds in G minor, and the West Coast premiere of David Avshalomov’s Diamond Variations, commissioned by MCO for performance with the Lincoln High School Chamber Orchestra, and Dubuque Iowa Community String Orchestra. San Jose Rep’s 25th Anniversary Season continues with “The Tricky Part,” Martin Moran’s Obie Award-winning, one-man play about sexuality, spirituality, and the mystery of human experience. Written and performed by Moran and directed by Seth Barrish, The play is This run marks the play’s California premiere and only Bay Area engagement. CHILDREN/FAMILY
September 30 – January 6, 2006
“Game On: The History and Culture of Videogames.” Explore the history, culture and future of video games at this temporary exhibit. “Game On” is a highly interactive exhibit that examines the exploding video game industry from the game design process and beyond. Come experience the past forty years of electronic gaming, and reflect on where the industry will go next. “Game On” was organized by the Barbican Art Gallery London in collaboration with the National Museums of Scotland. “Game On” will be at The Tech through January 6, 2006.

Take a guided, interpretive, tour from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. of the newly renovated Guadalupe River Park & Gardens trail system, new Visitor and Education Center, and points south. The tour will begin outside the Guadalupe Garden Center at 715 Spring Street and includes lunch provided by Lowry’s Irish Coffee House in the River Street Historic District and will continue on to Discovery Meadows where we will catch the light rail to head back towards Spring Street. The cost of the tour is $20.00 for Friends members and $25.00 for non-members which includes the tour, lunch and light rail tickets. Please bring a water bottle, sun protection and wear layered clothing and good walking shoes – we will be walking about 3 miles in total! Santa Teresa High School Holiday Boutique! STHS, 6150 Snell Avenue, presents its Annual Holiday Boutique/fundraiser. Do your holiday shopping with us!  Select from seventy-five vendors: handmade crafts, holiday decorations. jewelry, purses, blankets, scarves, natural cosmetics, candy and jams. Shop with your favorite direct sales marketers for Tupperware, Southern Living at Home, Creative Memories, Pampered Chef, Princess House, etc.  Live entertainment, food, free parking and admission. Leigh High School’s Fall production, “CLUE: the Play,” written by Jonathan Lynn and adapted by Jim Fourniadis and Cameron Eng will feature students on stage and on tech crew. Show time is 7:30p.m. at Leigh High School.  The Box Office opens at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $10 each or 4/$35 and there is no reserved seating.  For ticket information phone 356.3837.

November 18 – Friday
Alta Vista Elementary School, 200 Blossom Valley Dr in Los Gatos presents its first Annual Holiday Boutique. This is a great opportunity to purchase many handcrafted gifts from crafters in our local community, as well as get some great holiday shopping done. 10% of ALL vendor proceeds go to support Technology and 100% of Alta Vista’s profits will go towards technology. Come and enjoy refreshments, raffle prizes, lots of holiday cheer and some surprises too! We also have a coloring\craft station for kids while parents shop. Boutique hours are 2 – 8 p.m.

CLASSES
Ongoing:
Italian courses in Downtown San Jose: Italian Language courses will be offered at Holy Cross Parish, 580 East Jackson St. in San Jose. Beginner’s class meets on Mondays, 9-11a.m. the fee is $144 for 12 classes.

Intermediate class meets on Fridays, 9-11 a.m. the fee is also $144 for 12 classes. Advanced class meets on Thursdays, 9-11 a.m. the fee is $172 for 12 classes. Call 646-0232 for registration and additional information.

South Bay Deutscher Schulverein, a German Saturday Language School, offers German language instructions at the Willow Glen Educational Park, Middle School Section, 2001 Cottle Avenue. Fall Art Classes for Kids: The ArtHouse offers Fall fine art classes for kids ages 2-15. Classes include Little Picasso’s, a parent participation class, Masterpiece, which combines art history with  hands-on experiences, Drawing and Painting Techniques and Guest Artist Workshop where kids get the oportunity to work with a new artist each week. San Jose State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is offering a course entitled “The Portuguese in the Santa Clara Valley.”  This course is held on Thursdays from 1 - 3 p.m. and will meet in the University’s Professional Development Center, 2160 Lundy Avenue. The fee is $75 per person. Parking is free.  The Osher Institute is a program for people age 50 years and over.

Ongoing:
AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. The hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 278-1855.

The Geriatric Advisory Program is a service providing documented analysis, advice and resources to those caring for aging family members and is available through the Almaden Valley Counseling Service. Sliding scale fees available. 975-2988.

MISCELLANEOUS
November 5 – Saturday
To kick off National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, Humane Society Silicon Valley will hold a Pet Adoption Fair at Santana Row from 12-4 pm near Maggiano’s/Park Valencia. Cats, dogs and rabbits from the shelter will be available for adoption. All animals are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed/neutered and behavior tested.

November 7 – Monday
“Origin of the Universe” with Dr. Stephen W. Hawking: World renowned cosmologist and author of the best-selling book “A Brief History of Time”, Professor Stephen W. Hawking – at the forefront of research on both black holes and the origins of the universe – presents a rare public lecture on his current hypotheses at the Center for the Performing Arts.
