El Camino Youth Symphony at the California Theatre: Following their acclaimed performances this summer at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest and Dvorak Hall in Prague, the award-winning El Camino Youth Symphony launches its 2005-2006 Season at the California Theatre with a performance from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. The program includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, Hindemith’s Symphonic metamorphosis of themes by Carl Mara von Weber and solo performances by ECYS Concerto Competition winners Timothy Yu for Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, mvt.1.and Kenric Tam for Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, mvt.1. Santa Clara University Faculty Recital: Piano professor and Music Department Chair Hans Boepple will be performing an evening of classical piano works at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall. American Musical Theatre San Jose Presents “Little Women” at the Center for the Performing Arts in downtown. San Jose Rep’s 25th Anniversary Season continues with “The Tricky Part,” Martin Moran’s Obie Award-winning, one-man play about sexuality, spirituality, and the mystery of human experience. Written and performed by Moran and directed by Seth Barrish, The play is This run marks the play’s California premiere and only Bay Area engagement. CHILDREN/FAMILY
September 30 – January 6, 2006
“Game On: The History and Culture of Videogames.” Explore the history, culture and future of video games at this temporary exhibit. “Game On” is a highly interactive exhibit that examines the exploding video game industry from the game design process and beyond. Come experience the past forty years of electronic gaming, and reflect on where the industry will go next. “Game On” was organized by the Barbican Art Gallery London in collaboration with the National Museums of Scotland. “Game On” will be at The Tech through January 6, 2006.

October 15 – 16
Oktoberfest returns to downtown Campbell In the grand tradition of the great biergartens of Bavaria, downtown Campbell will once again be filled with the sounds of oompah-pah bands, strolling accordion players, the smell of bratwurst and of course, kegs of Spatan beer. Hours are 10 – 6 on Saturday and 10 – 5 on Sunday, so grab the lederhosen and head for downtown!

Oh Seuss!  Off the Great Places, an interactive exhibit, makes its only West Coast appearance at Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose: In honor of this Seusstacular event, a weekend of special Seuss activities is planned to celebrate the opening of this new exhibit.  A host of celebrity readers will be on hand reading their favorite Dr. Seuss books, and host of hands-on literacy activities will be offered through the weekend, including appearances by favorite Seuss characters and fun crafts. 30th Annual Showcase of Miniatures at Parkside Hall: The oldest & largest show and sale of dollhouse miniatures West of the Mississippi – This show will include workshops, children’s workshops, many exhibits and dealers from all over the United States. The show benefits the Planetree Health Library. An event for the entire family. San Jose Firefighter Burn Foundation Benefit: A family-oriented magic show at the Civic Auditorium to benefit the SJFD Brun Foundation. Performance is from 1 – 2:40 p.m. Admission is $35 per family. For more information, call 800-882-0400.

CLASSES
Ongoing:
Italian courses in Downtown San Jose: Italian Language courses will be offered at Holy Cross Parish, 580 East Jackson St. in San Jose. Beginner’s class meets on Mondays, 9-11a.m. the fee is $144 for 12 classes.

Intermediate class meets on Fridays, 9-11 a.m. the fee is also $144 for 12 classes. Advanced class meets on Thursdays, 9-11 a.m. the fee is $172 for 12 classes. Call 646-0232 for registration and additional information.
South Bay Deutscher Schulverein, a German Saturday Language School, offers German language instructions at the Willow Glen Educational Park, Middle School Section, 2001 Cottle Avenue. The school offers pre-school/kindergarten through adult courses on Saturdays from 9:00 - 12:00, starting September 17. For more information visit our website www.sbds.org or call 266 5100. Fall Art Classes for Kids: The ArtHouse offers Fall fine art classes for kids ages 2-15. October 6 - November 10
San Jose State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is offering a course entitled “The Portuguese in the Santa Clara Valley.”  This course is held on Thursdays from 1 - 3 p.m. and will meet in the University’s Professional Development Center, 2160 Lundy Avenue. The fee is $75 per person. Parking is free.  The Osher Institute is a program for people age 50 years and over.

Ongoing:
AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. The hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 278-1855.

The Geriatric Advisory Program is a service providing documented analysis, advice and resources to those caring for aging family members and is available through the Almaden Valley Counseling Service. Sliding scale fees available. 975-2988.

MISCELLANEOUS

More than 20 Latino World War II veterans will be publicly honored, and a selection of their personal stories will be digitally aired during a panel discussion at Evergreen Valley College, in the Sequoia Building, Hall S140, at 7:00 p.m. History San José (HSJ) and the Digital Clubhouse Network (DCN) have teamed up with La Raza Roundtable, HACE NASA Ames Research Center and Evergreen Valley College’s Enlace Program to salute Living Latino Legacies: a special program to honor Latino World War II heroes and tell their extraordinary stories of service.

Shop the world!  Shop handicrafts from Ten Thousand Villages at the 17 Annual International Gift Faire, held at the Lincoln Glen Church Fellowship Hall, 2700 Booksin Avenue in San Jose . This is the place for unique gifts—folk art—pottery from Viet Nam, batik table and bed covers from India, raffia  gift baskets by Ugandan weavers, handmade note paper from Bangladesh.  Plus jewelry from many countries including a new collection of Taureg tribal jewelry from Sahara silversmiths. We’re fair trade.  We’re non profit.  We’re part of a job creation and marketing program for tens of thousands of Third World artisans. Hours are 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

In recognition of National Feral Cat Day, Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) and Peninsula Fix our Ferals will host a special low-cost spay/neuter clinic for feral cats from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. The clinic will be held at Humane Society Silicon Valley, 2530 Lafayette Street in Santa Clara. San Jose Tattoo Convention: State of Grace Productions, LLC is proud to present the first ever international tattoo convention in San Jose at Parkside Hall. This event will feature live tattooing by professional tattooers from all over the United States as well as Europe and Japan. In addition to the tattoo work being done, there will also be a solo art show by “The Grime as well as “The Art Fusion Experiment:” a free form art collaboration by multiple artists using chalk on paper.
