Magician, Fall Book Sale highlight October at Vineland Library

Phil Ackerly will perform at the Vineland Branch Saturday, Oct. 22, from 11-11:45 a.m. just in time for Halloween! There will be mystery, mayhem and of course lots and lots of great magic as only the fantastic Phil Ackerly can perform. Come join us for an early Halloween treat! Great fun for the entire family. This fun event is sponsored by the Friends of the Vineland Branch Library and takes place in the community room.
BIG Fall Book Sale
Bargain hunters you won’t want to miss this ... on Saturday, Oct. 29, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Vineland Branch is having its Fall Book Sale. This hugely popular event will be staged in the community room and on the adjoining sidewalk. There will be a large selection of gently used and sometimes new books covering a wide range of topics and interests. Entertainment videos, DVDs, CDs and cassettes will also be available for purchase. There will be a special “Bag of Books” sale from 2 to 3 p.m. All proceeds benefit Vineland Branch Library programs and services. If you love books, you won’t want to miss this event. Join the Friends of the Vineland Branch Library as a volunteer or just come and enjoy our sale.
Apply online and pay fines online
In an effort to better serve San Jose library customers, the Library Department has unveiled its Apply Online and Fines Online. Apply Online allows residents to submit library card applications before visiting the library and Fines Online enables existing customers to pay fines using any debit or credit card bearing the VISA or MasterCard logo. Library customers benefit from the convenience of paying library fines and charges online, from home or office 24/7 with no lines and with credit card privacy. There are no paper applications to handle and less time waiting for staff data entry.
Events
- The Vineland Branch Library is having its first annual bookmark contest through Oct. 15 in celebration of Children’s Book Week. Children and young adults in grades one through 12 are invited to create an original bookmark promoting books and the joy of reading. Entry forms are available at the Information Desk must be returned to the Vineland Branch Library by Saturday, Oct. 15.

- Yoga for fitness and health—Vineland Branch Library is please to offer a free yoga class every Monday from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Instructor Vandana Kadam will give useful tips and demonstrate various yoga techniques for maximum benefit. Bring comfortable clothing and a yoga mat or anything that will provide you with a cushion to lie on. This class takes place in the community room.
- Science Fiction buffs, we have a book club for you! On Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. we will discuss H. G. Wells’ classics “The Time Machine” and “The Island of Dr. Moreau.” Visitors are always welcome.
- Adult Mystery Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 6:45 p.m. in Vineland’s community room. The book under discussion will be Martha Grimes’ intriguing work “Old Fox Deceiv’d.” All mystery fans are invited to attend.
- Teens (ages 13-18) are invited to participate in a special “Hurricane Relief” meeting Friday, Oct. 14, 4-4:45 p.m. in the library’s community room. The purpose of this meeting is to provide teen-to-teen assistance to the thousands of teens in the Gulf Area who have lost everything to the devastating hurricanes and floods. To immediately get involved with the outreach, go to http://teenink.com/ Hurricane/. Keep track of any time spent getting your relief items together and packaged. Community service credits will be given to participating students. Light refreshments will be served.
- After School Youth Activity Program—On Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 3:15–4:45 p.m., Vineland branch library is hosting a fun program geared to students in the sixth through the 12th grades (we will show a G-rated film geared to teens). The Friends of the Library will provide free snacks and sodas. This event takes place in Vineland’s community room.
- The Evening Book Discussion group meets on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 7- 9 p.m. in the library’s community room. Join us in a stimulating discussion of Alice McDermott’s “A Child of My Heart.” Visitors are welcome.
- The book discussion group for seniors (50+) meets on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 10:15 a.m. in the library’s community room. The book under discussion is Alice Sebold’s “Lucky.”
- The ESL Conversation Club is held every Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. in Study Room A. This one-hour session is a great way to practice English and make friends at the library. No pre-registration required.
- Family Story Time will be held on Saturdays at 11 a.m. in Vineland’s community room. On Saturday, Oct. 29, because of the fall book sale, the story time will be held in the children’s area.
-“Mr. K’s” preschool story time will be held on Wednesdays at 11:15 a.m. in the community room.
- Chinese/English Story Times will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 19 and Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
- Persian/English Story Time will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
- On Fridays, Toddler Story Time (ages 24-35 months) is held at 10:15 a.m. and Preschool Story Time (ages 3-5) is at 11:15 a.m. Please note: no story times on Oct. 7; the library is open 1-6 p.m. on that day.
- Mother Goose Story Time (ages 12–24 months) is held on Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m. This is a 20-minute program.
- Story Time Express, a 15-minute story time for preschoolers, is held every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
Vineland Branch Library is located at 1450 Blossom Hill Road. The library will be closed Friday morning Oct. 7, but will open 1-6 pm that day. It will be closed Sunday and Monday Oct. 9 and 10 for Columbus Day holiday. Please note the new hours: Monday 2 p.m.–7 p.m.; Tuesday–Wednesday 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; Thursday–Saturday 10 a.m-6 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. For questions, call 808-3000 during business hours.
