Parents and kids: Get those walking shoes on!
Los Alamitos Walk-a-Thon this Saturday
This Saturday students, parents and teachers will hit the pavement for Los Alamitos Elementary School’s biggest fund-raiser of the year.
The Los Alamitos PTA Walk-a-Thon has raised over $80,000 in the past for school programs and services. Teachers come out to support their classrooms, Principal Shyril McGuiness will be out rallying the children and parents, and the parents are out manning various booths and a silent auction, and, of course, walking with their children.
Children ages 5 to 12 get sponsors for every lap and many children walk an average of 17-plus miles before the end of the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. And, their parents indulge in friendly and competitive bidding for fabulous silent auction baskets.
The participation of the walk-a-thon is huge, with more than 87 percent of the student body participating. It’s a great day for the kids and a chance to show students the community in action working to support their school programs.
