St. Frances Cabrini Fiesta: This highly anticipated family-fun event features live entertainment Carnival-style rides and games, delicious food, and raffles. This year’s musical guests are: Silicon Valley House Rockers on 10/3 and The Cocktail Monkeys on 10/4. Event hours are 10/3 from 5 – 10 p.m., 10/4 from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and on 10/5 from noon – 6 p.m.

The Humane Society Silicon Valley’s 6th Annual Walk ‘N Wag at Kelly Park. Dog owners and their four-legged friends are invited out for a day of fun and fundraising at the HSSV Walk ‘N Wag Walk-A-Thon. Check-in begins at 7:45 a.m. followed by the walk at 9 a.m. In addition to the main event, other attractions will include dog agility and training demonstrations, a dog/owner look-a-like contest, vendor booths, and games for the entire family. Hundreds of people and their canine companions are expected to participate in this event to help raise money for the shelter animals. All animal lovers – not just dog owners – are encouraged to walk the course in honor of their pets. There is no fee to register for the walk, but walkers are encouraged to obtain pledges to help raise money for the shelter animals. Participants who raise $50 or more receive a free Walk ‘N Wag t-shirt. The community of St. Anthony’s Parish would like to invite people to bring their pets to receive a blessing given by Fr. Larry Hendel in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The blessing will be given on 10/4 at 5 p.m. at 21800 Bertram Rd. in San Jose, and on 10/5 at 1 p.m. at 20101 McKean Rd in San Jose.

Wildlife Festival at Youth Science Institute in Alum Rock Park: Hold a snake, touch a toad, and meet hawks, owls and other animals! Join us at the Youth Science Institute’s Wildlife Festival on Oct. 5 from 11a.m. – 4 p.m. at Alum Rock Park, 16260 Penitencia Creek Road in San Jose. Enjoy food and fun throughout the day. At this free event, families can participate in wildlife programs, hands-on science activities and crafts. This event is sponsored by Councilmember Nora Campos and Alum Rock Citibank. Do you enjoy working with children? Do you enjoy art? Let’s Look at Art, an innovative museum program in which trained art docents bring an education field trip into the classroom, is currently seeking volunteers. The times and dates of school visits are flexible. No art experience is necessary. Training will be provided, beginning Jan. 6, 2009. Santa Clara County Open Space Authority is looking for people interested in trail patrol for hikers, bikers and equestrians. On Oct. 29 from 7- 9 p.m. we will be holding an informational meeting, and on Nov. 8 from 12 - 5p.m. we will be holding a volunteer trail patrol workshop. SeniorNet, computer classes for adults 50 and over will hold registration for computer classes at the Almaden Community Center located at 6445 Camden Avenue. Registration for intermediate courses at 1:30 p.m. Registration for Computer Fundamentals at 3:00 p.m. Courses include Basic Digital Photography, Basic Digital Photo Editing, Greeting Cards, Windows XP, Computer Tips and Techniques, File Management and more. The Almaden Valley Counseling Service will begin its 7-week positive parenting class based on the STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) model weekly evenings from 7:15 to 9:15 pm. Preschool Class will be held on Monday nights starting Oct. 20; school age class will be held on Wednesday nights starting October 22; teen class will be held on Thursday nights starting October 23. No classes will be held the week of Thanksgiving. The cost is $110 for one parent or $165 for a couple. The 2008 Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon begins with the wheel chair invitational at 7:55 a.m. followed by the half marathon at 8 a.m. the course starts on Santa Clara Street at Almaden Avenue in San Jose. Immediately following the race, Creedence Clearwater Revisited will be the headline entertainment for the post race concert at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez stage. The concert is free and open to all. In addition to live bands and water stations along the scenic course through San Jose, high school cheerleading squads will be on-site to provide further entertainment and motivation to runners and walkers.
