Almaden Adventure in the Arts presents acclaimed Bluegrass quartet, “Highway One” performing at Joint Venture Churches of Almaden, 6581 Camden Avenue, in San Jose. Highway One is one of Northern California’s premier Bluegrass bands and has played to enthusiastic audiences since 1988. Please don’t miss the Mission Chamber Orchestra (MCO) opening concert event, “From Across the Pond” at Le Petit Trianon at 8 p.m. The featured performer is the insightful and technically gifted pianist, Roger Wright, as he performs Beethoven’s powerful Emperor Concerto. Performing with Wright will be soloist Emily Ray and performing with the MCO will be players from San Jose’s Independence High School. The much-anticipated California Theater Debut Season of Opera San Jose opens with W.A. October 2 – February 13, 2005
The San Jose Museum of Art Celebrates 35 years with “It’s About Time: Celebrating 35 Years” an exhibition of over 50 artworks selected from hundreds of newly donated pieces. This exhibit will showcase the tremendous support the museum has gained in recent years, through these unique pieces, all donated in honor of SJMA’s 35th year celebration. In addition to the new works, SJMA will publish a 288-page, full-color catalogue of the permanent collection. September 4 – October 3
George Bernard Shaw’s “Major Barbara,” an inspiring tale of big hearts and uncompromising ideals, will open the 2004 - 2005 Season of the San Jose Repertory Theater. Directed by Timothy Near, this classis tale tackles the thorny issues of religion, war, politics and social justice – themes as relevant now as when Shaw wrote it nearly a century ago. The Studio Theatre of California presents “Pillow Talk” at the Congregational Community Church of Sunnyvale, 1112 Bernado Avenue. Based on the screenplay by Stanley Shapiro and Maurice Richlin, this charming comedy features Dustin Milberg as Brad Allen and Molly Carter as Jan Morrow. Also featured are Howard Miller, Marge Hand, Jae Landers, Tim Blythe, Marcia Sternin and Simone Skeels. Pillow Talk is directed by Lisa Milanes. Lyric Theatre presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Gondoliers” at the Mayer Theatre, Santa Clara University. This fully staged production with full orchestral accompaniment has scheduled only six performances. Tickets are $26 each. Candidates running for San Jose City Council District 10 and State Assembly District 21 will participate in a Political Forum sponsored by The Almaden Business Association. This forum will be held from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at The Fish Market Restaurant, 1007 Blossom Hill Road, near Almaden Expressway. Everyone from the community is invited and encouraged to attend. Costco and Charlie’s Cheesecakes will provide refreshments.

Las Madres Adoption Group is a wonderful support system for those who have gone through the adoption process and are looking to share the joys and challenges of parenting an adopted child. CLASSES

The New Almaden Community Center will be hosting a weekly yoga class on Mon/Wed/Fri. at 6 a.m. and on Tues/Thurs. at 7 a.m. Attendees should bring their own yoga mats, however, there are a limited number of pads available. For more information, contact Tara at 997-9383. Class fees are $6 each or $24 per week. Classes are appropriate for both beginner and intermediate levels.

South Bay Deutscher Schulverein, a Saturday German Language School, offers German language instructions at their new location at the Willow Glen Educational Park, Middle School Section, 2001 Cottle Avenue. The 2nd Annual Health Expo and Symposium will be held at Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Community Services Church, 102 North Ninth Street. This three-day event includes a Friday night Health, Hope and Healing session, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. the Health Expo and Symposium on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. and culminates with a free healthy lifestyle cooking class on Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Come and learn how to become one of the healthiest people in America. This event is free to the public.

Ongoing:
AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. The Geriatric Advisory Program is a service providing documented analysis, advice and resources to those caring for aging family members and is available through the Almaden Valley Counseling Service. Sliding scale fees are available. 975-2988.

Come to Cesar Chavez Park in downtown to celebrate the 2004 Children Moon Festival, sponsored by the Viet American Cultural Foundation. Bring the whole family and enjoy the traditional Lantern Parade, cultural dances, children’s contests, Karaoke Contests, Lion Dances and ethnic cuisine. Admission is free to all. Festival hours are noon to 10 p.m.

Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum presents Gillian Altieri Art Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local artist Altieri will feature oil and watercolor paintings of historic New Almaden. Almaden Lake Park will be the new venue for the 28th annual Almaden Art and Wine Festival, hosted by the Almaden Valley Women’s Club, beginning at 10 a.m. This event includes many children’s activities, live entertainment, food and vendors galore, making this an exciting event suitable for the whole family. Madeline is coming to Pajamarama! The feisty French heroine will make a special appearance at Barnes and Noble Almaden’s Pajamarama at 7 p.m.. Don’t miss Madeline as she stops by for a one-of-kind storytime experience.

October 2 – Saturday
The 10th Annual Multicultural Harvest Festival at Prusch Farm, 647 King Road will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This annual event celebrates the community’s rich diversity and cultural heritage through a wide variety of live entertainment venues, including folkloric dancing and mariachi youth groups. Activities include pumpkin patch and sales, free hay rides, garden displays, children’s activities, petting zoo, pony rides and lots of food. For more information, call 926-5555.

October 1 – Friday
Union Middle School, 2130 Los Gatos Almaden Road, will be hosting their annual fundraising BLAST event from 6 – 9 p.m. This community-oriented event features an evening of games, food, and entertainment. MISCELLANEOUS

Parkside Hall in downtown San Jose will host the Rubberama Rubber Stamp and Paper Arts Festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $6 general, children under 12 years are free. This annual convention features a variety of rubber stamps and accessories, such as stationery, stencils, memory scrapbooking materials, embossing goods, etc. On going demonstrations during the show as well as free mini-lectures and “Make it and Take it” classes will be available as well. Save the date! The 11th Annual Almaden Times Classic 10K/2 mile run will begin at 9 a.m. The race will begin at Leland High School, and includes both a 10K and 2 mile run. Welcome Wagon #3 is a non-profit, diverse group of volunteers dedicated to charity, community and each other. Welcome Wagon offers 15+ activity groups of various interests for our members to enjoy. Twice yearly WW hosts charity events to raise funds, giving back to the community. WW #3 meets as a whole on the third Wednesday of each month for luncheons and programs to various restaurants in the area. New members are always welcome!
