Meals On Wheels seeks more seniors to serve

Openings are now available for additional homebound seniors in Santa Clara County who would like to receive daily hot meals delivered by Meals On Wheels.

Hot meals, ready to eat, are prepared at local hospital kitchens and delivered daily, Monday through Friday.

Special dietary needs, such as low fat, low sodium or low concentrated sugar, can be accommodated.

Equally as important as the meals is the daily human connection, according to Meals On Wheels Director Renee Kellythome. “For many, the Meals On Wheels driver who knocks on their door to bring them a hot meal is the only person they see all day. It is an opportunity for someone to check on their well-being and bring a friendly smile into the home.”

All 15 cities of Santa Clara County are served by Meals On Wheels, a program of The Health Trust, which serves more than 88,000 meals a year. For information, call toll free 800-505-3367 or visit the Web site at www.mowsiliconvalley.org.

Healthy families on deck for San Jose Children’s Health and Safety Fair

Stop, drop and roll over to the Giants “Health and Safety Fair” presented by Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and the Giants Community Fund. The fair is a free event, on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Selma Olinder School, located at 890 East William St. in San Jose.

The health fair will include tips and activities for kids of all ages and will run from 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

Community members and families will benefit from the variety of complimentary health and safety demonstrations, presented by various community organizations while learning new tips on healthy lifestyles and other grand slam safety tips. Giving kids a “high flipper” for learning life saving lessons, Giants mascot Lou Seal will be on hand from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

A special bike rodeo will be held at the fair, complete with a specially designed obstacle course, which will allow the children and families to proactively learn about the rules of the road. Several lucky children will ride home safely, as brand new helmets will be given away at the fair. Additional raffle prizes and other treats will be given away at the fair.
