Opera San Jose presents “The Crucible” at the California Theatre, The Crucible, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, is one of the few widely recognized operatic masterworks of the twentieth-century, it is uniquely American, set in Massachusetts and steeped in the history and values of this country.

Bin Huang in Concert at the California Theatre – one night only, from 8 – 10:30 p.m. This concert is a commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. It is primarily a classical music concert, featuring Bin Huang, the first prize winner of the 41st Paganini International Violin Competition. The concert repertoire comprises Jewish music and Chinese music during World War II, Paganini Caprices and Beethoven’s Sonata for violin and piano. The Studio Theatre of California together with The Fun Times Singers presents a Benefit Concert for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina featuring The Fun Times Singers directed by Laura Green, and The STOCtet directed by Kevin Cormier. The concert will at 8 pm., at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church, 2350 Winchester Blvd., in Campbell. The suggested donation is $5, but all donations are welcome. American Musical Theatre of San Jose presents a spell-binding version of L. Frank Baum’s beloved “The Wizard of Oz,” at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Featuring a cast of 70, lavish special effects, and vivid pyrotechnics, this timeless presentation brings back all of the favorite songs from the 1939 MGM film, as well as ‘The Jitterbug” which was cut from the original film version. Holy Family Parish, 4848 Pearl Avenue, Celebrates 100 years! Parish Festival commerates centennial event. Now in its 26th year, the festival will feature the Joe Sharino Band on Friday, Sage Band on Saturday, and Musician¹s Warehouse Band on Sunday. This community event includes carnival rides, international food, beer, wine, margaritas, games, a silent auction, bingo, and cherry bells for everyone¹s continued enjoyment. Back this year is KidFest on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Superhero Saturday will be the theme for this year’s KidFest. Children are invited to come dressed up as their favorite superhero. There will be two raffles, a 50/50 mega-raffle with a maximum prize up to $25,000, and a second raffle with a grand prize of $500 every month for a year, we will begin celebrating prize winners and the close of the festival on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to take part in this wonderful community event. Turn over those old leaves piling up in your yard this fall into a new compost pile! Master Composter, Phil Cornish, will be offering a comprehensive composting workshop, co-sponsored by Santa Clara County Home Composting Program and Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens. This session will cover topics such as: what can be composted, the various composting methods available, and what to do with finished compost. There will also be information about worm composting, or vermicomposting, and help with choosing which method works best for you. Class session is from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Visitor & Education Center, 438 Coleman Avenue in San Jose. The workshop is free, but space is limited. Learn to Write Your Life Story/Family History: Two sections of “Life Stories,” a 10-week life-in-review class will be offered on Mondays at the Unitarian Fellowship of Los Gatos, 15980 Blossom Hill Road. The morning session is from 10 a.m. to noon, the afternoon woman’s group is from 1 – 3 p.m. Instructor Sheila Dunec has over 20 years of teaching and counseling experience at Foothill College and has developed a course that make it easy and enjoyable for anyone to write about their life and family history. The Sierra Club, Loma Prieta Chapter is sponsoring a free film event! This is a potluck and screening, featuring the documentary “Thirst.” Join us for this exciting opportunity to eat and socialize with other interested activists, as well as learn about the struggle over the privatization of one of our most basic public resources: water. “Thirst” is a groundbreaking new one hour documentary that tells the story of communities stretching from Stockton, CA, to Cochabamba, Bolivia, to Rajasthan, India which are resisting privatization of their water in order to preserve water as a public trust. The screening will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the Vineland Branch Library, 1450 Blossom Hill Rd in San Jose.
