volunteer of the weekPet of the Week: Jeter

Jeter is a 9-year-old Almaden Valley German shepherd who has a heartwarming adoption story. When he was 8 years old, he was found abandoned and suffering from starvation and dehydration and chained to a pole when someone took him to an animal shelter. Luckily the shelter called German Shepherd Rescue and Jeter’s new life began.

They neutered Jeter and got him back on his feet so that he was able to live with a foster mother who was located outside of Oakland. The vets discovered a chip in Jeter’s ear that revealed that he came from quite a background—a German Seger “4” father (top designation) and a “3” mother. He was born in Texas where his litter was handled by a puppy broker and eventually sold for a lot of money throughout the country. No records were kept, unfortunately of these “transactions.” Jeter’s German name is Brix, which he didn’t recognize when first found.

Jeter lived with his foster mom for three months and she named him Jeter after the New York Yankees shortstop. (His adopted mom is a big Giants fan—oh well.) Jeter’s chances of being adopted were not too great due to the health issues and his age, but luckily he did get a permanent home with his new “mom,” Ellen Reuter in Almaden Valley, in May of last year.

Reuter later took in a 7-year-old female, “Sadie,” who is also a German shepherd and now the two dogs have each other as company while Reuter works. Jeter’s life has changed remarkably in a little over a year and his new mom says Jeter makes her life wonderful too.
