Get set for San Jose’s Comedy Competition at the Improv

San Jose’s Improv Comedy Club, which calls itself the epicenter of all things hilarious, has brought together the finest comedic talents for the final round of the 2007 San Jose Comedy Competition.

The 10 finalists will battle it out for the lofty "King of the Improv" crown at 8 p.m. on Aug. 29. Finalists include San Jose local Bruce Burton, Mo Mandel (Comedy Central; Late Night with Craig Ferguson), Kirk McHenry (Lafapalooza; BET Comic View) and David Van Avermaete winner: Rooster T Feathers Comedy Competition, Tommy T's Comedy Competition; and an ex-Fortune 500 CEO and former PGA golfer).

Replete with ring girls and opening band The Phenomenauts (at 7 p.m.), the night promises to be an all-purpose, multi-sensory entertainment spectacle.

"The comedians all save their best for the finals, so the final round is super intense," says Justin McClure, a previous winner, IMPROV favorite and show emcee. "There is so much at stake for the winner--cash, prizes and, most important, a recurring show at the Improv. The winner gets catapulted into comedy stardom, while the losers have to find another outlet out of their parents’ basement where they perform in front of sleepy puppies and a socially insecure ferret. Some gigs are tough."

Celebrity judges include comedians from NBC's "Last Comic Standing," UFC star Mike "Quick" Swick, Guess and Hawaiian Tropics Model Kim Cozzens, MMA fighter Daniel Puder, cheerleaders from the San Francisco 49ers "Gold Rush," 2006 San Jose Comedy Competition winner Justin McClure and others.

Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens seek golf carts

Donations of electric golf carts in good condition are being sought by Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens so that staff and volunteers can move more quickly through the 2.6-mile long regional park in downtown San Jose.

“We offer many education and recreation programs in different locations of the park, said Kathy Muller, executive director. “It would be a big help to transport supplies, for example, up and down the trails. Sometimes event sites are not near city streets or parking.”

Muller said electric carts are requested to minimize environmental impacts including air and noise pollution. Both two- and four-passenger cart models would be useful.

For further information, contact Kathy Muller at Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens, 438 Coleman Ave., San Jose, CA 95110, or call (408) 298-7657, or e-mail her at Kathy@grpg.org.

Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Donations are tax deductible under IRS guidelines.
