August 21 – Saturday
San Jose Wind Symphony will be holding auditions from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at San Jose State’s Music Building Performance Hall, One Washington Square, San Jose. There is Free Parking at the 4th Street and San Fernando Street Garage and at the San Carlos and 3rd Street Garage. There are openings for both permanent and approved substitute positions. July 25 – October 11
Tokyo-based Artist, Yoshitomo Nara’s: Nothing Ever Happens will open at the San Jose Museum Of Art in downtown. This will be Nara’s first major solo museum exhibit in the united States and is accompanied by a 96-page catalogue with essays by pop icons including Billie Joe Armstrong of “Green Day,” author Dave Eggers and Debby Harry of “Blondie.” Nara’s deceptively simple paintings, drawings and sculptures invite viewers to reconnect with the defiant spirit that comes with youthful optimism and the belief that someday we may change the world. July 27 - August 21
Monotypes by Almaden artist Cindy Blain are on exhibit at the XPO Gallery in the Wine Galleria, 377 South First Street, San Jose in downtown. The Artist Reception will be held on Thursday, August 5th, from 5 to 8pm — everyone is welcome. Monotype is a little-known medium by which one-of-a kind images are made using an etching press and smooth etching plates. It’s an exciting and experimental medium that leads to unusual and evocative artwork. Gallery hours are Monday & Tuesday, noon to 5pm; Wednesday to Friday, noon to midnight; Saturdays 5pm to midnight.

THEATER
August 20 – 21
Community Theater comes to Almaden Valley! Joint Venture Churches presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic World War II musical, “South Pacific.” All performances will be held at Joint Venture Churches, 6581 Camden Avenue in San Jose. Performance times are 7 p.m. on both days, and tickets prices are $10 each. Call 268-0243 on Monday through Friday and 356-8499 on weekends to reserve seating.

August 20 – Sept. 12
Shady Shakespeare Theatre Company will present William Shakespeare’s tragic masterpiece “Hamlet,” directed by Dinna Myers, at the Outdoor Stage of Sanborn-Skyline County Park located at 16055 Sanborn Road (off Highway 9) in Saratoga, Calif. All performances are free to the public and no tickets are required. Performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m.

DANCE
August 28 – Friday
“A Rose in Love’s Garden” presented at the Montgomery Theater in San Jose, in a concert of Persian music, dance and poetry, featuring Nejad World Music Center and Ballet Afsaneh. Dance Theater International will be holding open auditions for The San Jose Youth Ballet’s production of “Nutcracker.” Auditions will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the DTI studios, 4075 Evergreen Village Square, Suite 260. Oakridge Century Theatres in association with Las Madres Neighborhood Playgroups presents CineMamas! A morning out to the movies for moms and their little ones. This group meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m., There are three showings to choose from, baby-safe sound levels, cheerios at the concession stand and a relaxing atmosphere with other moms who understand kids are kids! HEALTH

The New Almaden Community Center will be hosting a weekly yoga class on Mon/Wed/Fri. at 6 a.m. and on Tues/Thurs. at 7 a.m. Attendees should bring their own yoga mats, however, there are a limited number of pads available. FIFTY PLUS

AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. August marks the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Zoo! In celebration of this event, visitors to the Zoo during the month of August will have an opportunity to live fond memories of bygone days with special exhibitions and self-guided tours. The 100-acre zoological park was founded on its current site in 1929 and has been one of San Francisco’s most enduring recreational and educational attractions. The American Association of University Women (AAUW)-San Jose Branch announces its 5th Annual Game Day and Luncheon, held from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at St. Timothy’s Hall, 5151 Carter Avenue, San Jose. Join AAUW members and friends in a day of games, fellowships, delicious food and all around fun. Tickets are $25 each, and all proceeds will benefit the AAUW Educational Foundation, which provides grants and fellowships for women pursuing postgraduate studies as well as research funding fostering understanding about women and their educational experiences. Join the San Jose Giants for “Sunday Friends Night” at San Jose Municipal Stadium in downtown. Spend a day of family fun exploring and learning about San Jose’s interesting past. Take a discovery tour of History Park where treasures from the city’s past are preserved. Step back in time as you visit historic sites during the Almaden Quicksilver History tour by van. The tour meets at the Quicksilver Mining Museum at 9 a.m.. The cost is $5 per person, tour hours are from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Bring sun protection, sturdy shoes, water and lunch.

OPPORTUNITIES

Ongoing:
EMQ Children and Family Services is a non-profit agency serving children struggling with severe emotional issues. EMQ is seeking adult mentors to connect with youth ages 7 – 17 for two hours per week. Training is provided. Applicants must be a licensed driver. Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing care to animals, has volunteer opportunities
for foster caregivers for kittens and cats and for petfaire workers for our Saturday PetClub events.
