Paddle under the moon at Anderson Reservoir
On Sunday Aug. 26 at Anderson Reservoir Launch Ramp, starting at 7 p.m., park rangers and interpreters will be leading a “Full-Moon Paddle” on Anderson Reservoir near Morgan Hill.
Discover the beauty of this scenic area by moonlight and learn about its nature and its colorful history.
Participants must provide their own seaworthy canoe/kayak, a paddle, a lifejacket and a glow stick. No other vessel types are allowed. Reservations are required for this event as well as a $6 vehicle entrance fee to enter the park. To make a reservation or to get more information, call (408) 846-5632.
Jonathan S. Louie graduates from the Air Force Academy
Jonathan S. Louie has graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. He received a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.
The academy offers a four-year educational program of instruction and experience designed to provide cadets the knowledge and character essential for air and space leaders, and the motivation to serve as Air Force career officers. The curriculum provides a balanced program of military training, academics, physical training, athletic conditioning and character and ethical development.
The courses of study allow cadets to acquire broad education in the basic and engineering sciences, social sciences, the humanities, including additional elective courses needed to complete requirements for one of 25 major areas of study.
The new lieutenants go on to serve as pilots, navigators, engineers, maintenance officers, professionals in various management and technical fields, and some attend medical or graduate school with special scholarships, while others go directly to non-rated Air Force-wide assignments.
Louie is scheduled to attend undergraduate pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas.
He is the son of Eugene H. Louie and Karenina Grun-Louie of San Jose, Calif. He is a 2003 graduate from The Harker School in San Jose.
Timothy McCullough graduates from OCS at Fort Benning
Timothy M. McCullough has graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
During the 14 weeks of training, the officer candidate received "basic soldiering" instruction in leadership, professional ethics, soldier team development, combined arms tactics, weapons defense, combat water survival, squad drill, intelligence, field training exercises and navigation, maintenance, communications, staff and general military subjects and physical training and conditioning.
The candidate was tested on leadership skills and teamwork abilities required of a commissioned officer. McCullough used acquired skills to function in "leader and follower" positions in squad and platoon sized elements in a stressful and demanding field environment.
McCullough, a signal corps officer, is assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, and has served in the military one year.
He is the son of Patrick B. and Mary C. McCullough of San Jose, Calif. His wife, Amanda, is the daughter of Raymond T. and Rita T. Casserly of Effie St., Bellaire, Texas.
