July 10 – Sept 4
Metro’s “Music In The Park” concert series will feature Concerts are free to the public and held consecutive Thursdays at downtown San Jose’s Plaza de Cesar Chavez from 5:30 – 9:15 p.m. Music In The Park is sponsored by Dos Equis and features an eclectic mix of top-name performers. Food and beverages are available at the park, as well as Lounge in the Park, open to the public for beer, wine and sangria. Aug. 24
Target presents Symphony Silicon Valley in a free family concert. Discovery Meadow Symphony Silicon Valley will perform the best loved music of musical theater, ballet, opera and symphony in a 3 p.m. al fresco concert at Discovery Meadow, next to Children’s Discovery Museum, located at West San Carlos and Woz Way, San Jose. This free outdoor concert event will include selections from Bizet’s Carmen and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony as well as special children’s activities. Get ready as San Jose Stage Company’s “Altar Boyz” rocks you to the heavens. Hitting The Stage at 490 South First Street in downtown San Jose, this hilarious off-Broadway musical phenomenon highlights quintessential boy band, Altar Boyz as they set out to “raise the praise” with every concert performance. Directed by SJSC’s Rick Singleton, Altar Boyz combines spectacular dance moves, angelic vocals and a touching story line to capture with perfect pitch the unique “boy band” culture. The Flamenco Society of San Jose presents “Brisas de España at the Historic Hoover Theater:  Carolina Lugo’s Brisas de España Flamenco Dance Company, recognized as one of the top Flamenco-Spanish troupes in the country, will be performing at 7 p.m. at San Jose’s Hoover Theater, 1635 Park Avenue. The antique jewels of the San Jose Fire Museum are on exhibit at the new Club Auto Sport showroom. Event dates are July 2 through Aug. 29, Wednesday through Friday, from noon to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays: 7/12, 7/25, 8/9 & 8/23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Club Auto Sport is the area’s premier attraction for auto enthusiasts and collectors, located at 521 Charcot Ave., San Jose. Pictured: This 1890 Steamer Fire Engine is an example of the vehicles on display at the new San Jose Fire Museum exhibit. It was San Jose Fire Department Franklin Engine 3, housed at Fire Station 3 through the 1906 Earthquake.

Miracle Treat Day at Oakridge Dairy Queen/Orange Julius: Westfield Oakridge Mall’s Dairy Queen/Orange Julius Treat Center will join the nationwide celebration of the third-annual Miracle Treat Day and donate proceeds from every Blizzard sold that day to Children’s Miracle Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals. Children’s Musical Theatre San Jose presents Pinocchio at the Montgomery Theater: Good-hearted Geppetto, the lonely woodcarver, fashions himself a son from wood only to have his creation spring to life. This CMT musical adaptation of the timeless children’s classic follows the boy-puppet Pinocchio in his quest to become a “real” boy. California Sports Center hosts “Learn a Cartwheel Day.” In celebration of the Summer Olympic Games and the sport of gymnastics, the public is invited to drop-in to any of the San Jose California Sports Center locations on Aug. 9 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. for a free cartwheel mini-lesson with a gymnastics instructor. These lessons are open to boys & girls ages 3 – 16 only. In addition to offering free mini-lessons, this event also marks the first day of official fundraising at California Sports Center on behalf of the Children’s Miracle Network, and in honor of National Gymnastics Day (Sept 13th). VOLUNTEERS

Aug. 12
Free Ice Cream! Want to do something different this summer to help your community and get a free ice cream as a reward? The Heritage Rose Garden needs volunteers to snip all the dead roses in order to promote more bloom. Help us out on from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with a sweet payoff at the end. No experience necessary. Volunteer experts will show you how.  Bring your own clippers, or borrow one from the staff.  It will be an enjoyable and rewarding way to spend a summer evening. Humane Society Silicon Valley is actively seeking volunteers to provide foster care to kittens and dogs. Foster families provide long and short-term care for animal families in their homes. Children’s Drawing & Painting Classes - art classes for children 7-12 years old are offered in Nelly Rouhani’s house in Almaden. Classes are on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. with a maximum 4:1 child to teacher ratio. Children will learn about the fundamentals of drawing and paint using various media. Take a Ceramics Class this Fall! Enjoy something different by taking a hand-building clay class in a relaxing garden setting. The classes are very small in size so you can focus on growing as an individual with lots of personal attention from the instructor.  Fall program will be on Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m., and Wednesday mornings from 9-10:30 a.m.. Aug. 9 – Oct. 31
“Embroidered Lace and Lacy Embroidery”, a new exhibit for the Sunnyvale Lace Museum will include handstitched items from the turn of the century decorated with various embroidery stitches.  Some of these items include scarves, gloves, dresses, blouses, and other items of apparel.  The museum gift shop also offers heirloom quality lace products and a full line of lacemaking items.  The Lace Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 552 South Murphy Avenue in Sunnyvale, with free parking.

Aug. 16 - 17
