Street Talk by Carol Rosen

What is your favorite season? What are you doing to beat the heat this summer?
(Asked at Almaden Lake Park and Almaden Oaks Shopping Center)

“I like fall best because the weather seems ideal for whatever you want to do. We love to go fly-fishing and it’s a great time to go on the water. Besides, you don’t have to water your lawn a lot in the fall. I also like spring, but I have 55 rose bushes too and I have to take care of them. I think this heat is miserable. We don’t have air conditioning. I beat the heat by sitting [on my property] by Los Alamitos Creek where there’s plenty of shade and cool breezes.”

“I like summer best because I have 14 grandchildren and in the summer I get to spend lots of time with them. I can deal with the heat, go to the water—like here at the park—and relax, barbecue and go fishing. The heat’s not so bad if you relax and sit in the shade.”

“Summer is my favorite time of the year. I like the longer days, the warmer weather and the relaxed attitude of summer. I also enjoy being outside and outside entertainment such as hiking in Almaden Quick Silver Park. I don’t mind the heat a day or two at a time, but I don’t like it when it goes on for a week or more. I beat the heat by walking early in the morning and then don’t do any physical exertion until the sun goes down. I also go to the movies and the malls or stay home in the air conditioning during the heat of the day.”

Carol Best, 62

Retired teacher

“I like summer because you can get out more, you’re not confined. The heat’s not too bad, especially when you compare it to Sacramento or Stockton or Tracy, it’s not that bad at all. I survive the heat by getting in the water or sitting in our beach tent by the shore here [at Almaden Lake Park]. ”

Martin Molina, 35

“I like summer best because it allows me time with my time with my family. I prefer the heat for its warmth and the fact that you get to barbecue, take vacations, swim and have more time with family. I like the heat, it doesn’t bother me too much. It’s not as bad out here as it is downtown. In the Almaden Valley we get breezes, and I can go swimming every day.”

George Hillyard, 52

“I like every season. They all have their own perks and each season is pretty in its own way. I like the heat because it’s a nice change from the rain and cold we had this winter. I beat the heat by staying in the shade.”

Alex Grossklaus, 18

“I like summer best because you can go swimming and it’s a great time for ‘chilling.’ I love the heat, if it gets too hot I go swimming or stay in the shade. ”
