June 22 – July 28
California Theatre Center (CTC) presents  “The Madwoman of Chaillot “ at The Sunnyvale Theatre, 550 East Remington Drive, Sunnyvale. Holly Cornelison stars in Jean Giraudoux's classic French satirical comedy. Performances are at 8 p.m. with a matinee scheduled for July 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $21-$25 and discounts are available for students, groups and subscriptions. July 13 – August 4
The Sixth Annual Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival presents three plays in repertory for its 2007 season in Oak Meadow Park, Los Gatos. Opening the season is William Shakespeare’s romantic adventure story, “Pericles, Prince of Tyre”, presented in the classical storytelling style of the 1001 Arabian Nights and directed by Bruce De Les Dernier. Following will be the timeless tale of power and politics, "Julius Caesar." The season will also include the rollicking comedy “Tartuffe” by Moliere; directed by Amy Himes. The festival has a number of free events lined up this season, including a stage reading of one of next years’ productions “The Further Adventures of the Three Musketeers”; as well as our Camp Shakespeare youth conservatory class performances. Youth Dance Company Auditions: Ladies and gentlemen ages 7 to 25 with performance experience are requested to email their resume to DTIdance@sbcglobal.net and schedule an audition by July 31. Accepted members are given a Performance Season, Choreography Opportunities, Cultural Events and Travel. July 12 – Sept. 6
Metro’s Music in the Park concert series presented by Dos Equis: Ten free outdoor concerts each Thursday – series opens with “The English Beat” (Ska Revival) also “Lemo” and “Dub X”. The new Santa Teresa Farmers’ Market is opening at the Kaiser Permanente facility in San Jose at the corner of Santa Teresa Blvd and Camino Verde. It will run every Saturday from 9am to 1pm through November 17, so bring the whole family down for food and fun.

June 20 – August 29
Free Summertime Cinema in downtown: Cinema San Pedro free outdoor movies will be shown at dusk every Wednesday. Located between Santa Clara and St. John streets, the first screening is “Airplane!” Bring your chair, sit back and relax! Escape to another world right in San José as History San José and Happy Hollow Park & Zoo partner to offer low-cost access to two of San Jose’s most significant attractions---all inside Kelley Park. On the second Tuesday of June, July and August, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., combined admission to all of Kelley Park is only $1.00 per person--- which includes Happy Hollow Park & Zoo and History Park. While at Kelley Park you can also visit the Japanese Friendship Garden, which is free and open daily year round.   This summertime outing offers families a chance to combine animals, history and gardens, all in one place:  Kelley Park in San José. Regular parking fees still apply. Calling all 5-10 year olds to get busy learning about bees! Join the Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens from 10 – 11:30 a.m. for a look inside an observation hive watching bees at work – can you spot the queen? Learn how the bees make honey and sample different kinds of honey. Discover how bees communicate by performing a bee boogey. Cost is $12/members $15/non-members. Children do not have to be accompanied by parents for this workshop. Register for the children and the adult bee workshop and get a $4.00 discount. The A-B-C’s of Bee keeping. Join Santa Clara Valley Bee Guild and Delta Bee Club member, Alan Henninger, and the Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens, from 10-11:30 a.m., for an adult program explaining the mysteries of bees. Learn what is required to set up a hive and get help identifying the inhabitants. Did you know that honey bees are not native to California, or that beekeepers rent out their hives to help pollinate fruit and nut trees? For an added bonus, Nella Henninger will show some of the by-products of beekeeping: honey and beeswax figures and candles. Gain a new found appreciation for some of the hardest working insects on our planet! Cost is $12/members $15/non-members. FIFTY PLUS

Attention recently retired or semi retired men! Sons in retirement (SIRS) meet on the second Thursday of each month at the Elks Club, 444 West Alma in San Jose for lunch. Join us for good food, great speakers and the chance to meet new friends. SIRS has many activities including bowling, golf computer clubs. SIRS has no initiation fees or dues. The San Jose Widow/Widowers Club meets at 12:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month for lunch at the Cup & Saucer Restaurant, 1375 Blossom Hill Road in Princeton Plaza. VOLUNTEERS

Free Ice Cream! Want to do something different this summer to help your community and get a free ice cream as a reward? The Heritage Rose Garden(Taylor and Spring streets) needs volunteers to snip all the dead roses in order to promote more bloom.   We’re hoping you will help us from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with a sweet payoff at the end. No experience necessary. Volunteer experts will show you how.  Bring your own clippers, or borrow one from the staff.  It will be an enjoyable and rewarding way to spend a summer evening. History San José is recruiting volunteers and docents. Join the HSJ corps of dedicated volunteers who share the love of history and the love of a pastoral setting. Volunteers receive training of their choice of categories:  school programs, historic building interpretations, archives, photography and object collections; retail store and café; gardening, special events and more. During the summer docents welcome visitors to the historic buildings at History Park weekdays as well as weekends, bringing history alive.  Specific historic buildings are open on a variable schedule throughout the summer. Interested volunteers should contact Barbara Johnston at bjohnston@historysanjose.org or 918-1047. Young Life Capernaum Project is sponsoring an Electronic Waste Recycling Event at Downtown College Prep (formally Hester Elementary School) parking lot at 1460 The Alameda in San Jose from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a free event.  Simply drive through and drop off your unwanted items, such as computers, small appliances, telephones, TV’s., etc., Please no freezers or refrigerators.

July 14
One Step Closer Therapeutic Riding, Inc (www.osctr.org) will host its first Poker Ride and Bar-B-Q fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Calero County Park in south San Jose. The event will raise funds to further develop the therapeutic riding program of this non-profit organization. The Poker Ride is for experienced riders, ages 14 and above, and will cover several miles of equestrian trails in the hills above Calero Ranch Stables, site of One Step Closer Therapeutic Riding. Experienced riders that want to participate should call One Step Closer at 997-7264. The entry fee for riders is $35 and includes lunch. Prizes will be awarded to riders with the largest sponsorship and the riders with the best poker hands.

Almaden Valley Auto Festival: Over 100 Street Rod and Classic Cars will be on display at this family event, along with children’s games, a live band and a BBQ. The show is from 5 – 9 p.m. at South Hills Community Church, 6601 Camden Avenue. Admission is free. For more information call 414-3003.

July 27 – 29
It’s the festival you can smell a mile away! Gilroy’s 29th annual Garlic Festival is hailed as the “ultimate summer food fair”, and once again promises three days of incredible food, beverages, arts and crafts and live entertainment. This event is held at Christmas Hill Park, 30 miles south of San Jose off Highway 101. Hoursa re 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. all days. Tickets are $112 general, $6 for seniors and students ages 6 – 12 years. Children under 6 are free. Advance tickets are available online at gilroygarlicfestival.com.
