Leigh band students wash cars to save seventh period

Fund-raising car washes, garage sales, etc. to continue throughout July

Ten Leigh High School Band students held a car wash Saturday and raised almost $900 in just five hours in an effort to “Save 7th Period.” Seventh period is at risk in a cost-cutting effort by the Campbell Union High School District, and parents, students and teachers have a July 31 deadline to raise $200,000 to save seventh period (see Almaden Times Weekly July 25 issue www.almadentimes.com ). Many feel the loss of seventh period could jeopardize music and art programs as well as hinder students’ efforts to get into the best colleges.

“Imagine if every school (feeder schools, Westmont, Del Mar, Branham, Prospect, and Leigh) had a car wash every Saturday from now until July 31, we could really raise a lot of money and give the students the opportunity to work for something so important to them,” said coordinator Roberta Zarca.

Leigh High School students plan to hold car washes every Saturday (July 3, 10, 17, 24) from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Leigh. Students—please come and help (bring a bucket, towels, soap, and other car washing supplies)! Parents and students—come and get your car washed!

On July 10, in addition to the car wash, the “Save 7th Period” group will hold a garage sale at Leigh. They are encouraging community members to bring any old unwanted items to Leigh at 8 a.m. If you want to price the item, or set a minimum asking price, place a label on the item. You can also bring baked goods to sell. “Please come and help, shop, and publicize this event,” says Zarea.

Border’s bookstore at Oakridge will donate 15 percent of all sales made July 2-4 with a special coupon to the CUHSD Save 7th Period Fund. In addition, Rasputin Music on Bascom Avenue will donate $3 to the Save 7th Period Fund with the purchase of three CDs or DVDs. Just ask for a school voucher with every qualifying purchase.
