Summer Reading Celebration begins with ‘Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales’
The Summer Reading Celebration, an eight-week program, starts Saturday, June 17 and concludes Aug. 12. As a special treat, there will be a series of fun-filled programs that will entertain and delight children of all ages. On Thursday, June 22, at 3 p.m. Miss Nancy and Mr. K present: “Claws, Paws, Scales and Tales.” Come and enjoy the antics of this dynamic duo as they tell stories, make music and perform a little magic. Kids of all ages will enjoy this program (held in the large community room).

On Thursday, June 29, at 3 p.m., meet the Lizard Lady, who will bring some of her prized lizards and will give an entertaining presentation on the habits and characteristics of her lizard friends. You won’t look at lizards the same way after attending this informative program. San Jose Public Library’s Summer Reading Celebration is an annual program designed to support family literacy through the promotion of reading and library usage. The entire family is encouraged to sign up and earn credits together for accumulated minutes of reading. Credits may be cashed in for a prize at each milestone. Prizes and other incentives are provided by the Friends of the Library to encourage our young people to become enthusiastic and proficient readers.

Stamping up a storm for teens
On Thursday, July 6 at 3 p.m., we are pleased to have Linda Levine as our craft expert. She is a remarkable communicator and is currently an instructor at San Jose State University. This fun, hands-on rubber stamp workshop for young people grades entering grades six through12 is geared toward both girls and boys. Make cards, hats, door signs, scrapbooks, and more with rubber stamps and old postage stamps. Everyone leaves with multiple creations. This Summer Reading Celebration program is made possible by a generous grant from the Friends of the Almaden Library. This event takes place in the library’s program room.

Events
- On Saturday, June 10 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Vineland Branch Library (1450 Blossom Hill Road) there will be a huge outdoor book sale. This great event is sponsored by the Friends of Vineland and Almaden Branch Libraries. There will be thousands of gently used and sometimes new books, entertainment videos, DVDs, and CDs available for purchase. From 2-3 there will be “a bag of books” sale for deeply discounted items. The proceeds of the book sale will be used for children’s programming and other worthy projects at the sponsoring libraries.

- On Friday, July 7, at 4 p.m., teens (ages 13-18) are invited to participate in the monthly Teens Reach meeting held in the library’s program room. The purpose of the group is to provide input on library programming and purchases that are geared for teens. Community service credits are given to participating students. Light refreshments are served.
