The Music in the Other Park 2008 concert series wraps up with Midnight Star and special guest Ryze The Band (formally Nu Day). Best known for the hit singles “Freakazoid,” and “Midas Touch,” Midnight Star’s retro funk sound has had people movin’ and shakin’ for over two decades. All concerts are free, and begin at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday through June 26 at St. James Park in downtown San Jose. Food and drink are available at the show. Lyric Theatre presents “The Pirates of Penzance” at the Montgomery Theater: Start with a band of rollicking pirates who get caught with a gaggle of proper maidens, then add in some ridiculous logic, a whimsical major general, the Keystone Cops, and a misplaced sense of duty. Almaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC) invites the San Jose community to its ‘Kick off Your Summer!’Open House & Community Day, a free, fun-filled day of family-friendly activities and health screenings from 2 to 6 p.m. AVAC will offer free body fat testing, blood pressure screenings and injury analyses. AVAC swim school instructors will also be on hand to discuss summer water safety tips. For the tennis enthusiast, AVAC tennis instructors will host first-come, first served hands-on clinics open to anyone 6 years and older. Other activities raffles for free tennis, swim and Pilates lessons as well as AVAC Fitness and Tennis memberships. Print your online raffle coupon at www.avac.us and bring it to the event. Dance Theatre International presents the children's classic fairy tale Ballet, "Sleeping Beauty's Wedding", the Evergreen Valley Performing Arts Center, 3300 Quimby Road (at Ruby) in San Jose. This production is danced to Pytor Tchaikovsky's score, and was especially created for families and children as young as 4 years. This fun-filled 45 minute performance is choreographed by DTI faculty and directed by Maggie Ferla. Sleeping Beauty’s Wedding is part of DTI's two hour Student Showcase that also includes world premier works by choreographer Gregory Dawson, formerly of Lines Ballet. Performance times are 3:30 and 7 p.m. Family-friendly pricing of $15 per ticket will be available 45 minutes before each show. Photo opportunity with characters at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Photo fee is $5. Check out the full-filled Summer Classes offered by the Friends of Guadalupe River Park and Gardens: Selections include Fitness Fun, Fossil Finders, Little Sprouts, Pioneer Parade and Nature Navigators. Most classes are from 9 a.m. to noon and are designed for children aged 5 – 7. The cost is $30. The Nature Navigators session is for children age 7 – 10 and runs from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. the fee is $40. Children’s Musical Theater celebrates 40th anniversary with free party in the park: CMT will host a free “Party in the Park” from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Plaza de Cesar Chavez in downtown San Jose. Open to anyone and everyone, this event includes performances by CMT members , a sneak preview of the 2008/09 CMT season, multi media entertainment, children’s games and an enormous cake to feed the expected 3000 people attending the event.

Bethel Church of San Jose presents “Celebrate America” at the Mountain View’s Shoreline Amphitheater, One Amphitheater Parkway. Open at 5 p.m .for concessions and family activities, the stage production begins at 8 p.m. Celebrate America is a nonpartisan patriotic musical celebration and laser light show. The musical portion of this event includes performances by the Voices of Bethel (a 100-member choir), the Kingdom Kids choir, Bethel’s 35 piece orchestra and drama/dance ensembles. The production also includes audience sing-a-longs, fun snippets about our country’s history, and a segment honoring veterans. The grand finale of the production will consist of a laser light show spectacular timed to music performed by our live orchestra. The day will begin with pre-show activities for the entire family. Kids in Parks - Summer Day Camp at Santa Teresa County Park's Historic Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch
Held Monday – Friday from 9a.m. -2 p.m. each day, campers will explore local history and nature through fun outdoor activities and adventures with Park Staff. Each day offers new and different topics to explore, while building a healthy, respectful relationship with the natural, cultural and historic resources in or near their neighborhoods. A maximum of 20 campers aged 9-11 years will be accepted. The fee is $150 per child. Please call Mary Berger at 323-0107 for program and registration information.

Humane Society Silicon Valley is actively seeking volunteers to provide foster care to kittens and dogs. Foster families provide long and short-term care for animal families in their homes. Summer of Service at Children’s Discovery Museum is a great way for youth to enjoy their summer while serving the community. Youth grades 7 through 10 participate on one of five teams, each with its own theme of service. These themes include community outreach, early childhood education, environment and ecology, media and museum, and leadership development.  Participants work in shelters, senior centers, and development centers; serve as role models and mentors for pre-school aged children while assisting classroom teachers; perform restoration projects throughout the county; volunteer in Children’s Discovery Museum while building media and technology skills; and build leadership skills while planning special projects and facilitating many important aspects of the program.  Visit www.cdm.org/sos for more information.

Almaden Valley Counseling Service presents the Cooperative Parenting and Divorce course ”How to Parent as a Team when you are No Longer a Couple.” Cooperative Parenting classes are for parents who are either divorced or in the process of divorcing. The class focuses on reducing parental conflict and addresses the factors that influence children’s post-divorce adjustment. This 7-week course will be held from 7:15 – 9:15 p.m. at 6529 Crown Blvd., Suite D, in San Jose. The cost is $145 and is limited to one parent from a co-parenting family. Children's Drawing & Painting Classes - art classes for children 7-12 years old are offered in Nelly Rouhani's house in Almaden. Classes are on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. with a maximum 4:1 child to teacher ratio. Children will learn about the fundamentals of drawing and paint using various media. The Marine Corps League Needs You!  We are a family support organization for Marines and Marine families. We participate in Veterans Parades and other Vet related events around Santa Clara County. Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley (JFS) will host the first ever Silicon Valley Duck Race at Vasona Lake County Park, 333 Blossom Hill Road in Los Gatos. A festival filled with entertainment, food and games will kick-off the event, followed by the duck race where 10,000 individually numbered rubber ducks will pour from a dump truck into a creek at Vasona Lake County Park and race into Vasona Lake. The top twenty winners of the race will have the opportunity to win one of several great prizes, including the chance to win $1,000,000. Proceeds from the Duck Race will benefit JFS and other local non-profits. Santa Clara High School Class of 1968 Reunion. This event is open to any attendee of the school from it’s inception up through the Class of 1981. Our event, “The Panther Festival” – is named in honor of the school’s mascot until it changed to “Bruins” in 1981- and it will include a BBQ picnic and music performance to be held on Jun. 14, at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, CA.
