Summer reading celebration begins

Mark your calendar for June 17! Summer Reading Celebration registration begins. Reading logs for Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales for children through fifth grade and Creature Feature for teens grades 6-12 record the minutes you read to earn prizes. Earn a free book of your choice. Of special note for teens grade six-12 are two weekly programs. From 3-5 p.m. on Thursdays come participate in a drum circle at our Thump! program, and on Fridays Creature Feature movies presents science fiction classics.
Call Vineland Library for the start date. Volunteers 15 years and older are needed to help with Summer Reading Celebration activities. Call 808-3020 for more information. Read the Events listing for June SRC programs.

Bargain hunters: you won’t want to miss the big summer book sale at Vineland on Saturday, June 10 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. sponsored by the Friends of Vineland and Almaden Branch Libraries. It will be a massive sale of gently used and sometimes new books encompassing a wide range of topics and interests. Entertainment videos, DVDs, and CDs will also be available for purchase. From 2 to 3 gather “A bag of books” for only a dollar. All proceeds benefit library programs and services.
Events
- Come enjoy the antics of Miss Nancy and Mr. K as they tell stories, make music, and do a little magic Tuesday, June 20 at 2 p.m.. For kids of all ages. SRC program.
- The Happy Birds parrot show will delight audiences with more than 25 amazing tricks on Tuesday, June 27 at 1 p.m. SRC program.
- Thump! Participate in a drum circle at this weekly Thursday program. Call the branch for the start date. SRC program.
- Weekly Friday Creature Feature movies show science fiction classics. Call the branch for the start date. SRC program.
- On Friday, June 9 from 3:30-5 p.m. the monthly teensReach meeting will be a work-project meeting to help set up for the Saturday book sale.
- The ESL conversation group is held every Tuesday at 1:15 in Study Room A. This one-hour session is a great way to practice English and make friends at the library. No pre-registration required.
- Chinese(Mandarin)/English storytime will be presented in the Children’s area on Wednesday, June 7 and June 21 at 7 p.m..
- Preschool storytime (ages 3-5 years) is held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:15 a.m.
- On Fridays, Toddler storytime (ages 24-35 months) is held at 10:15 a.m.
- Family storytime is held on Saturdays at 11 a.m.
- Storytime Express, a 15-minute storytime for preschoolers, is held in the Children’s area every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
- Science fiction fans, we have a book discussion group for you! On Saturday,
June 10 at 2 p.m. we will explore Douglas Adams’ imaginative classic, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” The group meets the second Saturday of every month.
- The adult mystery book discussion group will unravel Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “A Study in Scarlet” or any Sherlock Holmes story of choice on Wednesday, June 14 at 6:45 p.m. All mystery fans are invited to attend the second Wednesday of each month.
- The evening book discussion group will meet Tuesday, June 20 at 6 p.m. to consider “The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America,” the true story of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The group meets the third Tuesday of each month.
- The senior book discussion group (50+) meets Thursday, June 22 at 10:15 a.m. Nazi-occupied Poland is the setting for “The True Story of Hansel and Gretel: a Novel of War and Survival” by Louise Murphy. This group meets the fourth Thursday of each month.
Vineland Branch Library is located at 1450 Blossom Hill Road.
