As the third show in their third season comes to a close, the Tabard Theatre Company will offer a unique, hands-on presentation for the blind and visually impaired prior to their final matinee performance of Sabrina Fair on May 8, from 1:30 – 2:00 p.m.

Located in San Jose, Tabard is a relatively new theatre company that, according to their mission statement, “seeks to make a difference in the community” through theatrical productions that encourage diversity and understanding of a multi-cultural, multi-faith community. In their quest to include individuals of all ages, abilities, and heritages, the hands-on presentation literally reaches out to those with visual disabilities in a supportive, encouraging and enlightening environment.

According to director Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, the free pre-show event is made before one designated matinee of every Tabard production. Guests are invited to meet the cast, who will describe the sets, props, and costumes, which will be then passed around, enabling those who can’t see the performance to use their sense of touch to experience the production instead.

Nancy Campisi serves as the volunteer coordinator for the Lions Blind center on Bascom Avenue and is also visually impaired. She praises Cassetta and the theater for their ongoing efforts to make the event available for the members of the center who are either blind, or unable to see colors and facial expressions.
Prior to the performance, Cassetta pays a visit to the blind center and explains in detail what the play will be about, complete with character descriptions and music.

“It’s so like Cathy to do this pre show for us,” Campisi says. “It makes us feel special from the get go. Each time she gives one of these wonderful productions, she invites us to sit in the front row. The actors come out with the props that they’re going to be using and they tell us who they are, who they’re going to be, and describe the facial expressions they will be making. Then they pass out clothes for us to feel. We feel like we belong there. It’s very special and we appreciate if very much.”

Advance reservations for the pre-show performance are required and guide dogs are welcome. Tickets to the matinee performance following the presentation will also be available.
