California Youth Symphony announces auditions for 2004-2005 season
The California Youth Symphony (CYS) is now accepting applications to audition for any of its eight programs for the 2004-2005 seasons. The state's first independent youth orchestra, the organization annually serves close to 500 of the greater Bay Area's most promising young musicians ranging in age from 10 to 18. Members of the California Youth Symphony represent more than 100 local elementary, middle and high schools.
The CYS organization includes two full symphony orchestras: the California Youth Symphony Orchestra and the CYS Associate Orchestra, a percussion ensemble, and for younger students, an Intermediate and Junior String Ensemble, a preparatory Flute Ensemble and two Preparatory Wind Ensembles. Auditions will be conducted by the CYS artistic staff, which includes many prominent musicians.
The application form and $15 fee must be received by May 1, 2004. Auditions will be conducted May 29 and 30, 2004. Registration forms, program descriptions and audition requirements can be downloaded at www.cys.org
Participating in the California Youth Symphony helps develop an appreciation for classical music and provides an opportunity for students to work and study with talented professional musicians. Students usually rehearse once per week during the school year and attend a summer music camp. The various groups perform publicly three to six times per year.
Founded in 1952 and the state's first independent youth orchestra, the California Youth Symphony has conducted 14 international summer tours and it is one of the largest and most influential youth symphony organizations in the United States. The orchestra's concerts draw thousands of people annually and feature a challenging repertoire. Many of the orchestra's alumni have gone on to pursue solo careers or have joined major orchestras in the United States. Members are chosen at auditions held each May and membership is open to any musician high school age or younger.
