The Stars of the Moscow State Circus has entertained hundreds of thousands of children from 2 to 92 from Alaska to Newfoundland, Canada to the Hawaiian Islands and everywhere in between. Their slogan is “People Entertaining People,” and they have searched the globe for new and exciting acts to tour America today. As much Cirque du Solei as Ringling Bros., The Stars of the Moscow State Circuses goal is to elevate the artistry and theatre of the Circus. “Young at Art” is the theme of the 17th Annual San Jose Children’s Faire held at Discovery Meadows in San Jose to celebrate the”Month of the Young Child.” The Children’s Faire features over 60 activity booths sponsored by organizations and businesses with services and/or products for families with young children. Each booth offers a free, hands-on activity for children aged 2-12, as well as child development resources for parents and caregivers. Family entertainment, special attractions, exhibits, and food are also offered. Children’s Musical Theater San Jose’s Rising Stars production of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” will be at the Montgomery Theater in downtown San Jose for a limited engagement. Tickets are now on sale to the public for $15 adults, $12 children 12 and under. A special Target® Family Matinee performance will be held on Saturday, April 30 at noon, all tickets $7.25. Assemblywoman Rebecca Cohn will be hosting a Health and Wellness Resource Faire from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 2175 Lincoln Avenue in San Jose. The faire is free to the public and will feature free screenings including Diabetes, Blood pressure evaluation, Body Mass Index test (BMI) and information about health and social services. AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. The office is located at 840 Willow Street, Suite 300, at the corner of Bird and Willow Streets on bus route #25. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
April 23 – Saturday
Help an Adult Learn How to Read and Write Vision Literacy is conducting volunteer orientation at the Campbell Library from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. The orientation will provide an overview of Vision Literacy and describe the role of tutors and other volunteers in the program. Volunteer opportunities exist in community literacy, family literacy, substance abuse treatment programs and correctional facilities. The Campbell Highland Games Association is seeking volunteers for all day on Friday and Saturday June 17-18 for the 27th Annual Campbell Scottish Highland Games and Celtic Gathering. The event is June 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Campbell Community Center, but the work starts now. High school and Church community service groups are also welcome. Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley, www.wcsv.org, seeks center volunteers and home care volunteers to care for injured and orphaned wildlife for release back to the wild. We also need volunteers to help with educational outreach, database/office management, landscaping, facilities planning and fundraising. The Wildlife Center, located in San Jose, has an active and enthusiastic corps of volunteers committed to welcoming and training new supporters.  Join us in giving a hand to our Silicon Valley wildlife. The Junior League of San Jose will host the 36th Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the San Jose Convention Center, 150 W. San Carlos Street in San Jose. This event is designed to celebrate the important contributions made by volunteers in our community. The theme this year is “Celebrating Success in Voluntarism.” The Luncheon provides a showcase of the everyday successes of those inspirational volunteers who enlighten our community. Spring in Guadalupe Gardens Garden Festival and Plant Sale will take place from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm in Columbus Park in Guadalupe Gardens, at the intersection of Spring and Taylor streets in San Jose. This event features plant sales, garden art, expert gardening advice, alternative energy information, and books on gardening and local history. Children of all ages can enjoy free entertaining and educational activities. There is no admission charge and plenty of free parking. Docent led tours of Guadalupe Gardens will be held throughout the day.  Short presentations, sponsored by SummerWinds Nursery and Watershed Watch, will cover; Gardening for Wildlife, IPM (Integrated Pest Management), and Organic Fertilizer. The Kid’s Korner will provide free, fun and educational activities for children. Every child can play the games, win prizes, and plant seeds, while learning about the important eco-system of the Guadalupe River, native wildlife, pollution prevention, and water conservation. Join history buffs for Almaden Quicksilver County Park’s History Tour.
