Over 100,000 addicted to Alcohol in Santa Clara County
Alcoholism is a disease affecting up to 7 percent of the population, which means over 100,000 people in Santa Clara County are addicted to alcohol. “Although a devastating illness, it is treatable,” says Gabrielle Antolovich, a recovering alcoholic since 1977 and executive director for the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
April is Alcohol Awareness Month. Antolovich wants to show Santa Clara County residents that addiction recovery can be an exciting journey. For many county residents, including area teenagers, it is becoming culturally popular to be “in recovery.” Antolovich adds, “Once you get through the withdrawal symptoms and start getting your life together again, recovery makes food taste better, being with people more enjoyable and life more hopeful.”
There are now 585 Alcoholic Anonymous meetings each week in Santa Clara County. There are dozens of other ways that thousands of Santa Clara residents are finding recovery through Health Realization, SMART Recovery, Women for Sobriety and spiritually oriented organizations.
