Chargers and Mustangs split; Leland hammers Sobrato
Pioneer drew first blood in the rivalry of the two schools on the baseball field Mar. 12 at Leland. The Mustangs handled the Chargers 8-3 behind the solid complete game pitching from Don Medlinger, who managed to frustrate the Leland batters for the better part of the game.

Medlinger set the Chargers down one, two, three for five innings of the seven-inning game. Not until the bottom of the sixth did Leland figure him out when a string of base hits resulted in the only runs they would score. Nate Jones doubled to right center and was driven in by Trevor Dyer’s base hit. Dyer was knocked in by Spencer Lanoue’s hit. Lanoue eventually scored and that was all they would get.
It was a reversal of fortune on Friday, Mar. 14 at Pioneer when Leland defeated Pioneer 6-1 on their home field. Sophomore Sean Buchanan pitched admirably for the win with Cam O’Halleran coming on for the save starting in the fifth inning.

“Defensively, the play of the game occurred in the fifth, up 4-1 with bases loaded with one out when Cam came in to pitch with Lefeber at the plate. He hit the ball to Drew Marino, who knew exactly where he was going with the ball and we turned a double play to get out of that jam,” said head coach Tim Thompson.
Kevin Krail had two doubles and scored three runs to help the Charger’s cause. O’Halleran had a couple of hits and Will Boring and Dyer contributed to the scoring.
Saturday, March 15, it was back out to the field for their third game in four days to play a non- league contest with the Sobrato Bulldogs. Sobrato is tied for first place in the Santa Teresa league with Lincoln but proved no match for the Chargers who put them away early with a 10-1 win.

There was plenty of offensive firepower on display with Marino and Dyer both going deep for homeruns. It was Marino’s fifth and Dyer’s first homeruns of the season. Nate Jones went 3 for 3 with a triple and two stolen bases.
Nick Armand, Matt McDonald, RJ Aiken and Wes Deimling came up with hits and nice plays in the field. Junior Greg Hipwell got his first pitching win of the season by throwing five solid innings before Deimling came on in relief to register the save. Kevin Krail continued his assault on the stolen base record with a couple more base thefts. He is currently at 16 stolen bases on the year and only 13 off the record of 29.
“Overall it was a good week for Leland Baseball with three games and two wins. It would have been nice to have had three but with tough league weeks still to come, it was good to get the split with one being our first league road win.” said Thompson.
San Jose Vipers Lacrosse Club vandalized, robbed
Last weekend, the San Jose Vipers’ brown equipment box and all of its contents at the Campbell Union School District field where they play was stolen. It had its lock and chain cut off, and the box was carried away. The vandals also sliced all four of the goal nets, which will have to be repaired or replaced. It is estimated that the club lost approximately $2,200 in equipment.
The theft has been reported to the SJPD under case #08-084-0812 and the Campbell Union School District has been notified.
Some of the items that were kept in the box included two cases of field paint; one field painting machine; one field lining string, roll and marker; 30 reversable tank top pennies; three game boxes; 10 game timers; eight game horns; 10 mouthguards; three dozen balls; 16 orange cones; two game score boards, and four goal nets.
“This is a very unfortunate circumstance since these items have no replacement insurance, and the field rental contract with the Campbell Union School District has a ‘no liability’ clause,” said Ron Holcomb, Vipers president. “The club's budget did not have a provision that covered this kind of loss. Hopefully, we can absorb some of the additional costs and make do without a few of the stolen items. We have replacements to some of these items already that we can use, but we will have to purchase those that we cannot live without.”
Lacrosse is the fastest growing youth sport in the United States and the Vipers are San Jose's newest club, having only played two full seasons.
If you have any of these items to loan to the club for the rest of the season, or if you would consider donating them to the club, please contact Patti Holcomb at 832.2022.
