Almaden Valley Women's Club seeking applications for scholarships

Last year ten local students received financial awards between $800 and $1200 from the Almaden Valley Women's Club. The club is now seeking applicants for this year's scholarships. The purpose of the AVWC Academic and Service Award is to provide financial assistance to Almaden Valley students pursuing a higher education. The recipients of these awards shall demonstrate excellence of character as evidenced by a well-rounded balance of academics, school service, and community service.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Applicants must be graduating in the 2003-2004 year.

2. Applicants must be enrolled by the Fall of 2004 in an accredited college,

university, community college, or trade school and must have applied to this

school by the date of the scholarship application.

3. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average to date of 3.3. We allow

the University of California guidelines and award an extra grade point for

Advanced Placement and honors courses only. If your school awards an extra

grade point for accelerated classes, please reconfigure your GPA using the 4 point

system for those classes.

4. Applicants must be residents of Almaden Valley. Our boundaries are represented

by Santa Teresa Hill (Bailey Avenue) and Los Capitancillos of Sierra Azul south

of Guadeloupe and Almaden reservoirs. If you do not reside within the 95120 zip

code, please check the map before applying.

5. Each applicant must complete and submit the entire application as follows:

• Application and listing of school and community service.

• Two letters of recommendation. It is strongly suggested that one letter be from

a school official and one from a community service organization.

• An official copy of your high school transcript, including classes in Fall 2003.

• A personal essay following content requirements indicated on the application.

6. Applicants must be willing to allow the Women's club to use their names and

photographs for publicity.

7. Winners will be notified by Tuesday, April 27th, 2004. The awards will be

presented during the AVWC meeting on Tuesday, May 4th, 2004 at 7:45 p.m.

Winners and their parents will be invited to attend.

8. Applications must be COMPLETED in ONE mailing and postmarked no later
