Pioneer wins new Department of Ed award
Pioneer High School received the California Department of Education’s new Service-Learning Leader School Award at the California Service-Learning Leadership Institute luncheon on March 4.
The school is recognized for its integration of community service into its curriculum. All tenth graders are required to complete a sophomore project. They begin their year choosing an unresolved world problem and learn how they can contribute toward helping fix that problem.
Students choose their issue and follow with research, 30 hours of volunteer service, a written report and a visual display board. At year’s end, the school holds a Service Learning Fair displaying all projects to help further provide opportunities for community involvement. The school collaborates with more than 80 non-profit groups.
Last year, 41 Pioneer students earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award for performing 100 hours of service in a 12-month period, totally 6,400 hours.
