Leland JV baseball remains unbeaten
By Kevin Jones
Special to the Times
The JV Charger baseball team stayed unbeaten with a resounding 18-10 victory over the Cougars of Evergreen Valley on Saturday, Feb. 28. Ever since then, Mother Nature has imposed her will with rain cancelling games against Willow Glen, Saratoga and Sobrato high schools.
Thanks to five Evergreen errors in the bottom of the first inning, the Chargers took advantage and scored five runs. They never lost the lead while both teams combined for a total of 28 runs.
The Chargers have shown that they know how to score runs as they banged out 15 hits on the day. Tony Montini collected a couple of doubles and Conor Jones went 3-4 with a double of his own. Once on the base paths, the boys led a life of crime stealing bases at will. Robbie Zipp, Andrew Todd, Kevin Auser, Mitch Evanier, Jason Reyes and Chris Asplund all got in on the offensive effort as well.

Freshmen Jeff Carnduff and Steven Rodriguez took advantage of their first opportunities this season. Carnduff roped a triple his first time up and Rodriguez fresh off the basketball season drilled the first pitch he saw for a double.
Sophomore Michael Reeve started the game on the mound and threw with velocity shutting down the Cougar hitters. After Reeve came freshmen pitchers Tim McLaughlin and Kyle Marquez to close out the game. However, it wasn’t always easy as the pesky Cougars rallied for seven more runs to close the gap. Then the Charger hitters went back to work and started spraying the ball all over the field scoring another eight runs of their own in the final innings to put the game away.
Next up for Leland is a league home game against Santa Teresa. The rained-out games against Sobrato will be made up at a later date.
