Last week, state Assemblymember Tom Amiano filed a bill to make marijuana legal for people over 21 because he said it’s California’s largest cash crop and would help decrease current budget problems. What do you think?
(Asked at the Almaden Community Center/Branch Library)

“Yes, because we’re wasting a lot of money. It would be especially beneficial for medical marijuana because there have been federal raids on the growers and these are wasting federal money. I agree with President Obama that the states should make their own decisions on legalizing marijuana. It would also raise a lot of money helping reduce California’s deficit.”

“On the one hand, it would be a great money maker, but I worry about the kids. However, the more available it is, the less desirable.“

Dina Sargis, 42

Mom

“I was going to write to the Mercury News about this because I don’t think it’s a big deal to legalize it. And, if that’s a way for the state to recoup money, it’s something I’d think about.”

Judi Armacost, 41

Student/mom

“I don’t think we need any more vices in our society right now.”

Debbie Ray, 53

Kindergarten teacher

“Yes, I’m for it because I think it’s a good thing. The government can make money off it and they should allow it. They let people drink; marijuana should not be a problem. Alcohol is worse in my opinion.”

Judy Bartholic, 45
Almaden
House cleaner

“I don’t use it myself. Maybe for those who need it for their health it’s OK, but not across the board. I don’t think it’s necessary unless it’s for medical reasons.”

Kirk, 72

Retired

“I really think one solution is that some drugs should be legalized. While drugs are illegal, it’s the province of drug dealers who have a lot of money and power. It’s a good idea to legalize it and reduce their power. Make it like tobacco with restrictions.”

Emilio Gonzalez, 43
Almaden
Company owner

“It’s a gateway drug. The kids start there and try for bigger and better things after that. It stunts kids’ maturity.”
