Leland baseball gets started despite weather

The Charger boys of summer got an early start to the 2009 baseball season.

On Saturday, Feb. 21, during a break from the rain, Leland’s JV baseball team got started by finally playing a game against an opponent other than themselves. After weeks of practice, the young Charger team hosted their first pre-season game against Scotts Valley. The Chargers were hardly gracious hosts as they lapped the Falcons14-7.

Sophomore Jason Reyes started the season on the mound in victory over Scotts Valley.

The boys in blue got off to a red-hot start in their half of the first inning by batting around the order and scoring five runs and gaining a lead they would not lose.

Mother Nature proved to be an opponent the Chargers could not beat as she won the following Monday and Tuesday games with rainouts. Those games will be rescheduled, weather permitting.

Sophomore Andrew Todd makes a running catch against Scotts Valley.

With new skipper Scott Simms leading the squad, the outlook for success this season is positive. Coach Simms is joined by second-year assistant Anthony Martinez.

The JV team is made up of sophomores Conor Jones, Mitch Evanier, Matt Marcoccia, Tony Montini, Jason Reyes, Michael Reeve and Andrew Todd. First-year players are Tim McLauglin, Trevor Ramsey, Kyle Marquez, Steven Rodriguez, Ben Maxwell, Chris Asplund, Robbie Zipp, Jeff Carnduff, Kevin Auser and Jordan Olmstead.

Mount Hamilton Athletic League play started March 3, when the Chargers traveled to Sobrato High School.
