PEO holds fundraiser; raises $10,000-plus

The PEO, which is a philanthropic education organization celebrating the advancement of women, held a fundraiser at the Almaden Community center in January where the group raised more than $10,000 to help educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.

Since its inception in 1869, the group has awarded more than $180 million in scholarships and graduated more than 9,000 women from Cottey College. The group has stewardship of Cottey College, a private liberal arts and sciences college.

“We had a really successful night with almost 100 people in attendance, and were able to bring in over $10k in ticket + auction sales, the biggest fundraiser of record for our local Chapter VW,” said Chair Janet Romero. All of the proceeds from the event will help fund one of the many scholarship awards. And ALL of the food (except for the crab) was donated to help us minimize our cash outlay and maximize our profits. We even had live music, played by a group named RTZ who generously donated their time and talent for our event. Their music was fantastic and one of the highlights of the evening!”

Despite the dour economic situation, many within the Almaden community donated food, service and time to support the PEO. In addition, there were many people volunteering to help out with food preparation and cleanup. Committee members helped the entire event run smoothly including Romero, Margaret Demers, Lela Huenergardt and Terry Stavang.
