Chargers lose to league leader Piedmont Hills

The Leland boys’ basketball team played a close game on Saturday against Piedmont Hills but still lost 53-43 in a contest with the league-leading team.

“We had a couple of opportunities to win,” said head coach Steve Seandel. “The game was close throughout, but we couldn’t get over the hump.”

The Chargers moved up to the Mt. Hamilton division this year and are one game out of third place. Seandel said the boys are working hard and playing hard. “They are really working. This league is a big step up in the level of competition,” he added.

The leading scorer for the game was senior Drew Marino with nine points, including two three-pointers. Junior Gregg Hipwell was the leading rebounder, and sophomore Trevor Marino also had a three-pointer.

The Chargers are 3-7 in league play and 10-12 overall. On Friday they play Westmont and next Wednesday will play against Sobrato.

Leland girls’ basketball loses to Leigh, Piedmont Hills

The Charger girls’ basketball team worked hard but still lost last week’s games to Leigh and Piedmont Hills.

The team is young, said head coach Ana Patejdl. “We also lost a lot of kids from last season.”

While the team lost to Leigh by a score of 52 to 39, they played well, said Patejdl. The teams were tied going into the third quarter where the Chargers outscored the Longhorns, who recovered and took over the game in the fourth quarter to win.

Junior Ana Castillo scored nine points as did junior Mari Yanai, who hit seven of nine free throws and scored two other points despite playing with a swollen finger.

The girls also lost Saturday’s game with Piedmont Hills—one of the Mt. Hamilton division’s top three teams—55-37. Piedmont Hills led throughout the game, although the Chargers managed to nearly keep up in the third quarter scoring 12 points to the lady Pirates’ 15.

Again juniors led the scoring with Castillo garnering eight points and junior Kelly Nakamura also hitting eight including two three-pointers. Junior Jenny Egelston was the leading rebounder with five and also scored a couple of points.

Of the teams12 players three are seniors, eight juniors and one is a sophomore. Only five from last year’s squad returned and seven are new to varsity this year.

In addition, this is Patejdl’s first year as a head coach. She was assistant coach at Gilroy last year. “It takes a while to get things going,” she said, “but the girls are working very hard.”

The Charger women are 1-9 in league play and 3-18 overall.
