Seeks scholarship applicants, installs 2008 board, open to new members

The Almaden Valley Women’s Club Service and Academic Scholarship Award committee promotes student service and academic achievement through scholarships, which are funded through the Almaden Valley Art & Wine Festival.

The scholarships recognize high school students for outstanding leadership in service to their community. The AVWC has several scholarships to distribute to deserving students this year. The individual scholarships may range from $500 - $1,000.

Awards are open to graduating high school seniors who will attend an accredited two- or four-year college or university as a first-time freshman in the fall of 2008. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.3 and reside within the 95120 zip code. Winners will be selected based on outstanding volunteer experience, academic performance, school activities, letters of recommendation and a personal essay.

Applications must be received between Feb. 8 and April 4. Application packets are available from school counselors and on the club’s Web site. Mail completed packet to the Almaden Valley Women’s Club, Attn: Scholarship Chair, P.O. Box 20084, San Jose, CA 95160. For complete application guidelines, visit www.almadenwomen.com.
2008 board installed

The AVWC’s 2008 executive board was installed on Jan. 8. Board members bring a vast amount of entrepreneurial and fund-raising expertise to the organization.

The new board, which consists of seven longtime members of the club, were installed at the Almaden Valley Country Club and includes, pictured from top left clockwise, Kimberly Pertner, Lauren Wilson, Michelle Correa, Jenny Teixeira, Sherry Penny, Linda Bronson and Cathy Castillo.

AVWC’s purpose is to stimulate, by the active participation of each member, interest in the social, civic and cultural improvement of the Almaden community. Its members are committed to serving the needs of the Almaden Valley community and those of greater San Jose, through funds raised at our annual Almaden Valley Art & Wine Festival. All festival proceeds are donated as community grants to non-profit children's foundations, educational facilities, teen programs and community.

New members welcome
The club is seeking local women to participate. The AVWC was organized in 1965. Some of the recipients of past fund-raising are the Diabetes Society, Sunday Friends, Loaves and Fishes, Special Olympics, Emergency Housing, National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), Hospice of the Valley, Assistance League, Career Closet, Forward USA, San Jose Library, Music in the PARK and Almaden Valley Counseling Services (AVCS).

Club members participate in the Almaden Valley Art & Wine Festival, make new friends and attend social events and help make a difference in the Almaden Community.
