Leland beats Pioneer, loses to Leigh
By Kevin Jones
Special to the Times
The Mustangs came to the Charger gym last week one game behind Leland in the Mount Hamilton Athletic League standings. This they knew. What they did not know was the Chargers would round them up, brand them and send them back to the ranch with a 54-24 loss.

From the opening jump ball the Chargers wasted little time in running to a 8-0 lead, which they only built upon as the game progressed. Leland never looked back in the game as they kept up the defensive pressure all night.
The Mustangs only managed six points in each quarter, with Leland holding some of Pioneer’s leading scorers in check.

Trevor Marino was all over the court, driving in for layups, drawing fouls and playing tenacious defense. But mostly he took over the game scoring 18 points with four three-pointers. Greg Hipwell and Jake Peterson chipped in with 10 points and sophomore Justin Dueck tallied six.
Unfortunately the high of the Pioneer game did not last into the game with Leigh in the Charger’s gym on Jan. 30.
The Leland squad started out flat falling behind the Longhorns 20-12 by the end of the first period.
The Chargers played Leigh tough in the second period outscoring them by two points. Leland again outscored their opponent in the third period but it was clear they had dug themselves too deep a hole in the first to make up enough of the deficit. The Chargers only managed three points in the fourth period and Leigh put them away, 47-36 to win the game.
Once again Marino was the leading scorer for the Chargers with eight points. Alex Ramos and Greg Hipwell added seven apiece and Jake Peterson and Justin Dueck contributed five points each.
