Reading, Chinese New Year featured at Vineland Library in February

February’s featured events at the library:
Children and adults will be thoroughly entertained by the fantastic singer, Tim Cain when he performs at the library on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. Of course he will sing his popular song “Good Morning Dear Earth.” Leave the library singing and feeling happy! All ages are welcome.
Vineland Library celebrates Chinese New Year on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. with a spectacular performance of Shaolin Kungfu Zen, based on Shaolin Buddhist culture and many styles of Chinese martial arts. Experience this unique and exciting celebration for the whole family.
Help us celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with Read Across America! We’ll have stories, crafts, prizes, refreshments, and more at the Reading Challenge and Hullabaloo, Saturday, Feb. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Coming in March
Celebrate Teen Tech Week as we make felt cozies for phones and MP3 players on Tuesday, March 4 at 4 p.m.
Three-week Parenting Workshop in Spanish. We will focus on kindergarten readiness. March 4, 11 and 18 from 6-8 p.m.
Celebrate Norouz, the Persian New Year! Children’s songs, dancing, a youth orchestra, crafts, and much more. Saturday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Almaden Library and Community Center.
Other Special Events:
- Laughter Yoga returns on Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
- Take a deep breath and relax with our Meditation Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 1:30-3 pm.
- Teens are invited to make a journal on Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. We will make covers for journals using decoupage. All craft materials will be provided.
- Kids in the Kitchen on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 11:15. Preschoolers ages 3-5 and their parents are invited to learn about healthy foods and prepare a snack. Pre-registration is required; please call 808-3000.
Book Clubs:
- Saturday Sci-Fi Book Group will meet Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. We will be reading “Way of the Pilgrim” by Gordon Dickson.
- Adult Mystery Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 6:45 p.m. We will be reading “The Shifting Tide” by Anne Perry. All mystery fans are invited to attend the second Wednesday of each month. Visitors are always welcome.
- The Evening Book Discussion Group will meet Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. This month we read Silicon Valley Read 2008’s selection “The Distant Land of My Father” by Bo Caldwell. We usually meet the third Tuesday of each month. Visitors are always welcome.
- Senior Book Discussion Group (50+) meets Thursday, Feb. 28 at 10:15 a.m. “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddon will be discussed. The group meets the fourth Thursday of each month. Visitors are always welcome.
- Vineland Fantastic Kids’ Book Club: Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Do you like to talk about the books you’ve read? Would you like to make new friends? Then join our book club for children in grades two through five. In February our second and third graders will read “I Was a Third Grade Science Project” by Mary Jane Auch. Our fourth and fifth graders will read “There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom” by Louis Sachar.
Story Times:
- Join us for our brand new Bilingual Story Time. Stories, songs, finger plays and more in Spanish and English. All ages are welcome. Come join the fun on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
- Mother Goose Story Time features short rhymes, songs, finger plays and books to create a gentle language enrichment experience to bond children and their caregivers. Mother Goose is for infants-2 year olds and is offered every Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
- Story Time Express is for children of all ages on Wednesdays at 3:30 and Thursdays at 11 a.m.
- Wednesday Preschool Story Time for ages 3-5 is at 11:30 a.m.
- Family Story Time is held on Saturdays at 11 a.m.
- Story Time for Twos will be held on Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
- Chinese/English Story Time is on Wednesdays Feb. 6 and 20 at 7 p.m. This month we will have special Chinese New Year stories and songs.
Regular events and workshops:
- Yoga will be held on Monday nights at 6 p.m. Come relax with a yoga instructor. There is no charge for yoga. Please bring your own mat.
- Learn to knit or teach someone else at our Knitting Circle. Open to all ages. No charge. Bring your materials. Every Saturday at 4 p.m.
- One on One Internet and Computer Help: The library has knowledgeable, helpful volunteers to assist with your specific questions. Call (408) 808-3020 to set up an appointment. For people 16 and older.
- The ESL Conversation Club is held every Tuesday at 1 p.m. This one-hour session is a great way to practice English and make friends at the library. No pre-registration required.
- teensReach meets Friday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. Teens ages 13-18 are invited to participate in our monthly teensReach meeting. Community service time is earned. Light refreshments are served.
- Wii Wednesdays are every Wednesday from 3:30-5 p.m. Teens, come experience the new Nintendo gaming sensation!
- Thursday Thump is a drumming workshop every Thursday afternoon from 4-5 p.m. Learn drumming techniques from an experienced musician.
- Vineland’s Anime Club is for teens grades six and up. Watch new anime episodes and trailers and discuss your favorite manga. Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
- Third Friday Craft: Friday, Feb. 15 from 4-5 p.m. Join us as we make a surprise craft. For children in grades kindergarten through six. All craft materials are supplied.
Please note, all San Jose Public Library branches will observe holiday closures on Feb. 17 and 18, however, King Library will be open on its regular schedule.
