Street Talk by Shari Kaplan
If you had to sum up or describe Almaden Valley in a few
sentences, for someone who's never been here and knows nothing about
it, what would you say? (Asked at Almaden Oaks shopping
center, at Redmond and Meridian)
"It's an established California neighborhood. It's typical
of an upper-middle class area with by and large nice people, well-kept
streets, good recreational amenities and an agreeable climate. It's
a safe place to raise kids as well. It's part of San Jose, but it
has its own unique flavor."
Peter Fera, 61
Almaden Valley
Staff scientist
"There's a lot of nice people in this area—everyone,
really. People always say hi and are really polite. My brother and
I have lived here all our lives. Sometimes some streets in our neighborhood
have block parties. And all the kids in this shopping center hang
out together and have fun."
Mary Clark, 14
Almaden Valley
Middle school student
"We have property in Phoenix and every time we fly back I look
at Mt. Umunhum and the green hills of Almaden Valley, and I know
I'm home. The other sides of the Santa Clara Valley are more urban
or barren. We've been living here since the early 1970s; I still
feel like it has a country feel."
Pauline Sanfilippo, 60s
Almaden Valley
Retired
"It's a quiet, clean neighborhood with great schools and very
nice people. We've been here 10 years and I love it. We probably
won't ever move again. Before we bought a house here, we looked
all over, and when we found our home in Almaden Valley, we knew
this was it!"
Andy Dymoke, 48
Almaden Valley
Marketing director
"It's one of the safer places in San Jose to raise kids. I
don't have kids, but I wouldn't mind raising them in Almaden Valley
if I have them. People are nice too; I work in this shopping center
and there's a lot of nice people. There are also a lot of good hiking
trails here in Almaden."
Denée Sheldahl, 22
Blossom Valley (formerly of Almaden Valley)
Journeyman supermarket clerk
"I think it's quiet and pleasant and has a real nice atmosphere.
Almaden Valley is second only to Los Gatos in terms of places I'd
like to live. I've lived here for 33 years. I also like that it's
close to anything major that you might want to do, like Sharks games
or the Civic Light Opera in downtown San Jose."
