Blood shortgage worsens as ‘domino effect’ takes hold

The Bay Area is facing another serious blood shortage. Type O-Negative and Type B-Negative blood donors have been donating at American Red Cross blood centers in response to the emergency appeal for blood announced last week as a result of the blood supply declining to dangerous levels. Now, other blood types are quickly following the same trend as Type A-Negative supplies have decreased to less than a one-day supply.

“We want to thank Bay Area residents for responding immediately to the emergency appeal for blood donations,” said Sara O’Brien, American Red Cross Blood Services, Northern California Region spokeswoman. “Blood supplies remain dangerously low as the demand for blood outpaces donations daily. Blood donors are needed throughout January, and into February, to prevent further depletion of the blood supply and potential cancellation of surgeries.”

To donate blood, you must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in general good health. To find a mobile blood drive or to schedule an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE or visit BeADonor.com.
