Last fall, the mayor asked children 13 and younger to submit their artwork interpretations of the city’s Green Vision Goals, and about 135 of them complied, including 35 from Almaden Country School, which boasted six winners (see Almaden Times, Jan. 11-17).
Almaden Country School art teacher Sharon Wilkus made the contest a fourth grade project. “It gave them an opportunity to think about the subject. They made their choices from the 10 Green Vision goals and moved forward,” she told the Times.
Entries came into the mayor’s office, which narrowed the selections down to three for each goal. City staff and council members and their staffs voted on the finalists said Michelle McGurk, the mayor’s public information officer.
“Part of the goal was to inspire kids about the environment. We had hoped teachers would take it on as a class project,” she added.
Besides have a special time to meet and talk with the mayor as well as say the pledge of allegiance on stage, the students had breakfast at the event. “Having the students here made the day even more special for the kids and for the mayor, McGurk said.
