Street Talk by Shari Kaplan

In light of the unpredictability of the weather in January, what are some of your favorite rainy-day activities? (Asked at Almaden Quicksilver County Park)

"I like riding in the lighted indoor arena at Lightfoot Stables here in Almaden. You can get your exercise and your horses can too, and you can play with your horses and have a good time. Our horses board at the Lightfoot pasture, so we can use all the facilities. I try to go riding, outdoors or indoors, at least three or four times a week. Our horses are athletes; they have to stay in condition."

"Rainy days give me the opportunity to open a book and read, or maybe go to the movies. I'm not an avid reader, but I think reading is an important thing to do, so rain is like a 'force of nature' that gets me to read! I have a wife and a 5-year-old, so rainy weather also gives me a chance to spend more time with my family."

Jim Kent, 33
San Jose
Mortgage broker

"We enjoy going to local coffee shops like Flower Flour in Willow Glen. They sell different coffee drinks and bakery products, and they also sell fresh flowers. We like to sit there and read books and magazines and talk to pass the time. Or sometimes, we just go shopping. The stores are less crowded when it's raining."

Chigusa Katoku, 30

ESL teacher

"Sometimes on rainy days I play board games with my family, or friends, or both. It's fun to beat my younger sister! Sometimes I watch sports on TV. I'm a sports fanatic: football, soccer, basketball—I love it all. Almost anything that's on ESPN, I'll watch. Oh yeah, and I do homework on rainy days too. This is my first year in high school and I go to Presentation."

Hillary Graham, 14
Almaden Valley
High school student

"I like eating, cooking and composing. Eating can be anything from cereal to gourmet food. I also do a lot of cooking. When I compose music, it's usually Christian—contemporary or rock. We also like to rent movies a lot, especially when it's raining. Although I don't think rain would really stop us from doing what we'd normally do, even if it was something like hiking."

Jonathan Nichols, 28
San Jose
Music director

"One of my favorite rainy day activities is hiking in this park. Hardly anyone comes here in the rain, so it's really quiet. Hiking in the rain isn't as bad as it sounds, if you have the right clothes. It's really pretty here in the rain, with a lot of clouds coming over the hills, although sometimes along the ridge on Castillero Trail it can get really windy when a storm is coming in."
