The San Jose Chamber Orchestra presents “Saints and Sinners” by Craig Bohmler and Marion Adler (premiere). Featuring Barbara Day Turner, conductor and mezzo Layna Chianakas with baritone Robert Orth. Ladyesong a Woman’s Vocal Ensemble, are seeking new singers. Applicants must be able to sight read and be available on Monday evenings for rehearsals. Founded in the winter of 1995 by director Mary Elizabeth Enmann, Ladyesong has been working toward sharing the gift of music and a commitment to the community in the South Bay Area. Ladyesong enjoys performing a variety of vocal music, both sacred and secular - from Gabrielli to Gershwin, from Dvorak to Doo Wop - and has provided music during local church services as well as concerts in community venues. Jan. 22 – Feb. 3
American Musical Theater San Jose presents “Little Shop of Horrors” at the Center for the Performing Arts: Nerdy floral assistant finds romance with the help of an enormous man-eating plant who was sent from outer space to take over the world. Not your average-sounding musical, but are all part of “Little Shop of Horrors,” the comedy classic that will have you singing along to the rock’n’roll doo-wop sounds of the 1960s. CHILDREN/FAMILY

Jan. 12
Come to Guadalupe River Park & Gardens from 3:30 – 5 p.m. as we “Shake, Rattle and Roll” things up and learn what drives the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates. Build a volcano to take home and watch it erupt again and again. We will create a yummy snack that shows the inside of the Earth and all of its different layers. Learn how to stay earthquake safe and design a plan to help your family when the next earthquake occurs. Appropriate fro children 5 – 10 years. Fees are $8/members and $15 non-members. Youth Indoor Model Airplane Contest:  Boys and girls 18 and younger, build and fly a simple model airplane with expert help, enter the contest.  Prizes awarded through 5th place in five events. Jan. 12 – Mar. 2
History San José hosts “Becoming American: Teenagers & Immigration”, an exhibition of photographs from
Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services, featuring photographs by Barbara Beirne. This exhibit will be open to the public at History Park. Students from Andrew Hill High School, Downtown College Prep, Notre Dame High School, Oak Grove High School, Overfelt High School and Santa Teresa High School will also be exhibiting their first-hand experience with immigration expressed through their photography.  Their assignment, with their families’ permission, was to select a friend or peer to photograph and document their experience of immigration into the United States. YSI Summer Science Camp. It’s not too early to start planning for summer! Youth Science Institute has Summer Science Camps for children ages 3 ½ to 14. YSI members can register their children for summer camp starting January 14th. Public registration opens Feb. 19th. There are over 35 camps to choose from and camp fees range from $150 to $250 per week, starting June 16 through August 15 at each of YSI’s Science and Nature Centers - Alum Rock Park, Sanborn Park, and Vasona Park. The Committee to Promote Square Dancing is sponsoring a square dance refresher class for experienced dancers: Fees are $2.50/seniors and youth, $5/adults.  Classes meet Tuesdays, 6:30-9 p.m. in the Camden Community Center Multipurpose Room, 3369 Union Avenue, San Jose, 95124. For more information, call 723-0315.
Ceramics classes for adults.  Do something totally fun and creative for yourself in 2008...Hands On Clay classes in Almaden is now accepting applications for its small, relaxing clay classes in January on Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m., and Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11 a.m. The fee includes instructions, clay, glazes, use of tools, and kiln firings. Jan. 22
Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens to hold Volunteer Coffees: Two Volunteer Coffees will be held at the Visitor & Information Center, 438 Coleman Avenue in San Jose, to introduce prospective volunteers to the many opportunities that are available. Event times are 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. These Coffees are informal, and will present an overview of the park’s history, design and development, as well as information on volunteer opportunities. Dreaming about a new car? Head on down to the San Jose McEnery Convention Center for the 2008 Silicon Valley International Auto Show where more than 400 of the latest cars, trucks, crossovers and sport-utility vehicles will be showcased. This automotive extravaganza will give attendees an up close look at the newest vehicles in a non-selling environment, including hot concept cars, luxury rides, tricked-out aftermarket vehicles, exotics, hybrids and more. St. Timothy’s Lutheran School, 5100 Camden Avenue, San Jose, will host a Free “Kindergarten Readiness” presentation for parents at the school’s January principal’s Coffee. Open to the public, this discussion begins at 9 a.m. and will feature guest speaker Lori Burns from the Santa Clara Partnership for School Readiness.

Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens present the adult workshop, “Hunters of the Sky.” Join Karen Hoyt of Sky Hunters Environmental Education from 10 – 11:30 a.m. as she presents a program that will introduce you to raptor biology. The focus will be on raptors that can be found within or near the Guadalupe River Park, and the importance of both nocturnal and diurnal raptors to an ecosystem. Hoyt will bring two birds of prey that may include the American Kestrel, Barn Owl, or Peregrine Falcon. Space is limited to keep the birds calm and comfortable. Electronic Waste (e-waste) Recycling: Live Oak Academy is hosting a free recycling event to be held at Foxworthy Baptist Church, 1774 Foxworthy Ave., from 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. This is a simple and convenient way to get rid of any old computers or electronics that may be cluttering up your space, and help our school raise funds. So bring your old TV's, stereos, telephones, computers, monitors, peripherals, printers, etc.  All items recycled locally by a state authorized recycling company. For questions, call 355-4935.

The Almaden Valley Al-Anon Family Groups meet every Friday from 10to 11:45 a.m. and on Sundays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 1198 Redmond Avenue, San Jose. Al-Anon helps families and friends learn what they can do about excessive drinking, alcoholism and its effects on the entire family. Meetings do not require appointments.
